Released in 1976 5 years after their second album Green Man and with a completely revised line up, Pictures From Cyclus 7 was not only Ache's best album, but the best Danish prog album period. I have heard quite a few bands from Denmark, Norway, et all and been hugely let down trying to find something along this album's lines of melodic disciplined progressive pop/rock with no self indulgence whatsoever. Ache had made two high quality if inconsistent psychedelic/progressive records in the form of De Homine Urbano and Green Man, but this line up of 6 musicians + lyricist Bo Lillesoe made what is the unbeatable album from the Nordic Realm.

When Paul McCartney - who arguably kick-started the whole baroque pop genre when he recorded the likes of 'Yesterday' and 'Eleanor Rigby' with pivotal strings arrangements - made his oft-quoted remark that pop was the classical music of the 20th Century, perhaps he meant it in a more literal sense than anyone realised at the time. In the immediate wake of ground-breaking albums like Rubber Soul, Revolver and Pet Sounds, the British and American music scenes became increasingly ambitious and cerebral. As the major recording studios becoming ever more sophisticated, a new generation of musicians and producers sought to emulate the backroom auteur status of Brian Wilson or the symbiotic relationship between George Martin and The Beatles.

Previous Grapefruit genre anthologies have shown how the various strands of British psychedelia developed tangentially in subsequent years: I’m A Freak Baby observed how the blues-based, harder-edged element of the genre gradually morphed into hard rock/proto-metal, Dust On The Nettles examined the countercultural psychedelic folk movement, while Come Join My Orchestra looked at the post-“Penny Lane” baroque pop sound. Our latest attempt to document the British psychedelic scene’s subsequent family tree, Lullabies For Catatonics charts the journey without maps that was fearlessly undertaken in the late Sixties and early Seventies by the more cerebral elements of the underground, inspired by everyone from Bartok, Bach and The Beatles to Dada, Dali and the Pop Art movement. Suddenly pop music was no longer restricted to moon-in-June lyrics and traditional song structures. Instead, it embraced the abstract, the discordant and the surreal as pop became rock, and rock became Art.

Excellent addition to any Prog-Rock music collection
This one is the jewel of Symphonic and Psychedelic-Rock from Latin America in the early seventies.
The name of the band was “Frutos Del País”, and I could compare their music with Procol Harum, which is clearly their main influence.

Laurelie was one of the first bands from the Belgian progressive scene - along with Waterloo, Irish Coffee, Jenghiz Khan & Mad Curry. Their eponymous and now very expensive album (worth 500 euro in Near Mint condition) was released in early 1970 on Triangle label. This minor psych-prog masterpiece (with plenty of nice flute parts) was still rooted in the late 60's songwriting tradition, when condensed tracks were preferred over improvisations. On the other hand, an amazing (and 10-minutes long) opening track was typical progressive offering - with everchanging moods and lots ofguitar, Hammond organ and flute interplay. This premiere CD is necessary for fans of early Jethro Tull, Traffic, The Moody Blues and Cressida. Laurelie split up the same year and bassist Pierre Raepsaet went to Jenghiz Khan.

Zomby Woof was a German symphonic rock formation, the name is derived from a Frank Zappa's his Mothers Of Invention composition. The band is rooted in 1971 when guitar players Heinrich Winter and Udo Kreuss joined Frank Keinath on bass and Thomas Moritz on drums in order to form a band that still had no name and no gigs. Soon Frank moved away and no replacement was to be found. As a consequence Ulrich Herter, another guitarist, joined the band and Udo Kreuss changes to bass guitar. Shortly afterwards the two keyboard players Matthias Seelman-Eggebert (Hammond organ) and Matthias Zumbroich (keyboards) also joined which meant that the sound changed, influenced by PROCOL HARUM.

COUPLA PROG had no album release during their existence from 1969 to 1975 which is a great surprise. The members decided to work without any commercial approach. The band's complete material was recorded at four sessions between 1970 and 1972 and buried in the archives until the beginning of this century…
