The early musical experiences of Puccini and Verdi, those two giants of Italian opera, were in fact gained in the field of sacred music. In 1880, at the age of 22, Puccini composed his Messa a 4 voci as a graduation exercise. When still a schoolboy, the 45-year older Verdi stood in for the organist in his home village; at the end of this life, he returned to church music, writing his Quattro pezzi sacri in the 1890s at the age of over 80. The Messa of the younger composer – which was believed lost until 1952 – is a joyful and scintillating work. Artistically, Verdi’s powerful and intense Pezzi sacri can be placed on an equal standing with his beloved operas.

Puccini? è un lavoro iniziato dall'artista nel 2001 con un primo avvicinamento al mondo e alle arie del musicita, registrando in studio un primo brano, a cui è seguito nel 2009 un percorso di rilettura di sette arie, in ambito elettronico, partendo dalle partiture originali. La scelta del repertorio è stata fatta seguendo l'amore per le singole arie, senza considerare se si trattasse di arie per voce femminile o maschile. Nemmeno le tonalità sono quelle originali, ma sono state decise cercando quelle che risultassero più naturali.

Starring Bocelli in the lead role of Calaf the unknown prince, his powerful tenor tells a compelling story of riddles answered, triumph secured, honour displayed and love deeply felt. The key role of the icy riddler princess, Turandot, is sung by American soprano Jennifer Wilson.
