Puma Blue

Joe Puma may be a peripheral jazz guitarist, but he possesses world-class chops on this 1999 outing. A former replacement for Tal Farlow in Artie Shaw's Gramercy Five, Puma shows a strong chord melody style on the heads and flexible improvisation utilizing single string lines and block chording. With only Murray Wall on bass and Eddie Locke on drums, Puma negotiates his way through a set of jazz standards like "I'll Remember April," "Sweet Sue," and the title track with consummate ease and flair. Pumas are powerful and rarely filmed predators. This documentary follows a puma mother and her three cubs in the Torres del Paine National Park in southern Chile. State-of-the-art HD technique, thermo- and remote-controlled cameras show undisturbed, intimate behavior not only of the puma mother and her family. The film delivers high-end scenes of one of the most beautiful regions of the world, with spectacular granite peaks, turquoise-blue lakes, white glaciers, vast steppes and unique wildlife.

"East Coast Jazz Series" is a Jazz series produced by Creed Taylor while working for Bethlehem Records, and launched in 1954 "to distinguish the new music emerging in New York from the new jazz in Los Angeles and San Francisco". The series includes individual releases by Bobby Scott, Vinnie Burke, Joe Puma, Herbie Mann, Milt Hinton, Urbie Green, Hal McKusick, Sam Most, Kai Winding & J.J. Johnson. There were nine albums in total.

"I wanted to try and showcase as many people as I knew on this mix. My idea of Late Night Tales was to distil a series of relaxing moments; the whole conceptual sonic of relaxation. So, I was trying to think of all the collaborators and friends that I knew, who'd recorded stuff with this horizontal vibe. Plus, I was also trying to help my friends' stuff get into the world. I know the story of Khruangbin blowing up after appearing on the series (in fact, I think that's how I discovered them). So, the main idea was to create a certain atmosphere, but also to help some of my favourite collaborators and buddies to give their songs a little push out into the world.
