Terrific compilation of Mason's MCA years.
The third time around in constructing a Dave Mason compilation, Blue Thumb Records (which had been acquired by ABC Records, and which in turn would be swallowed by MCA Records) finally made a worthy selection of its cache of Dave Mason recordings from 1970-71.

Exhaustive 30 CD collection from the Jazz legend's short-lived label. Contains 44 original albums (421 tracks) plus booklet. Every record-collector has run across an album with the little sax-playing bird in it's label-logo, right next to the brand name Charlie Parker Records or CP Parker Records. Turning the sleeve over, especially if it was one of the non-Parker releases, and seeing a '60s release date under the header Stereo-pact! Was as exciting an experience as it was confusing. Was the claim Bird Lives meant more literally than previously thought?

This edition presents, for the first time ever on CD, the only two LPs by Herbie Mann and his New York Jazz Quartet in their entirety. This short-lived group would only record one third and last album on which two percussionists were added, transforming the group into a sextet. The NYJQ presented an unusual instrumentation for jazz, consisting of Mann on reeds (flute, alto flute, clarinet and tenor sax), Joe Puma on guitar, Dutch player Mat Mathews on accordion, and Whitey Mitchell on bass. The two albums compiled here are New York Jazz Quartet (Elektra 115, later reissued on LP as Adam's Theme), and Music for Suburban Living (Coral CRL57136).

Jazz / West Coast Jazz / Cool / Piano

I really enjoy this cd. Sharon is known for his arrangements usually with strings for many vocalists (from Cole to Nancy Wilson, Whiting to Bennett) So I was surprised to hear his septet which sounds like any West Coast combo with Jack Sheldon, Shorty, Shelly, and Florence among others. The tunes are nice; each very different from each other with subtle colors. I passed over it twice until I realized the label FRESH SOUND imports never disappoint me.
