Those who choose to focus their energy on arranging and composing rarely get the attention and praise that comes to their instrument-wielding counterparts, but the cream always manages to rise to the top and get noticed. Such was the case with the great Gil Evans. He expanded and experimented with the sonic color scheme of jazz during his time with the Claude Thornhill Orchestra, helped to define "cool jazz" while working with Miles Davis, collaborated with said trumpeter on a string of classic albums for Columbia Records, and fused musical ideals, worlds and expressions long before the word "fusion" took on significance in the realm of sound.

In 'n out is extremely top quality jazz that deserves the highest of ratings. Right here you have the greatest rhythmn section in the world of McCoy Tyner, Richard Davis, and Elvin Jones. The horns are of course Joe who is just smokin' and Kenny Dorham who was one of the uncredited but most influential trumpeters and in some ways created the basis of hardbop trumpet playing. Dorham was constantly being overlooked, in the forties and fifties he was in the shadow of Dizzy and Miles and in the sixties Lee Morgan, Freddie hubbard and Woody Shaw came along. Blakey once defined Dorham as the uncrowned king of the trumpet, but enough about Kenny. The title track opens with a complicated theme and Elvin really gets into the groove, his intense drive will never be matched by any drummer. McCoy has incredible fingers I don't think there is a better pianist in the world. Kenny's solo kind of cools things off a bit but Joe takes another and the burner is on high again! "Punjab", by Henderson, reseambles the kind of compositions that people like Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter were writing. Kenny contributes two obscure but unique sounding compositions "Short Story" and "Browns Town." "In 'n out" is Joe's finest album. It's brother album is Tyners "The Real McCoy" with Henderson, Ron Carter, Elvin Jones.

Seventy-years ago, the Great American Songbook was still paramount as the professional jazz performer’s bible. Players who couldn’t hang when popular tunes were called summarily found themselves shame-faced on the sidelines of a jam session or gig. Though barely pushing forty, saxophonist Stephen Riley comes out of that storied fealty to melodic mastery and the primacy of a well-minted song. Ten years Riley’s senior, pianist Peter Zak is equivalently versed.

This progressive session from Joe Henderson is a quintessential mid-'60s Blue Note disc. Although a great deal of attention has been placed on the significance of the work of Miles Davis and John Coltrane at that time, Henderson was one of the leaders in the '60s scene that forged new ground into adventurous areas of jazz. The saxophonist plays sharply with a highly rhythmic style that swings and strides through the modally oriented material of stellar tracks like the blazing title cut, "Punjab," and the funky mambo "Short Story." Joining Henderson on the session are Kenny Dorham, McCoy Tyner, Richard Davis, and Elvin Jones, the last of whom drives the proceedings like a madman in one of his best non-Coltrane performances.

After dropping the synthesizers and reformatting his group Horizon in 1990, alto saxophonist Bobby Watson recorded one of the most memorable CDs of his career. His opener "The Punjab of Java Po'" is a powerful hard bop number with elements of East Indian and Brazilian influences, while its catchy bass vamp supports strong solos by pianist Edward Simon, trumpeter Melton Mustafa, and the leader. Drummer Victor Lewis proves to be as gifted a composer as Watson. He wrote two vehicles for Watson's soprano sax: "Big Girls" and the tense, uptempo "7th Avenue." The arrangement of standards such as "Falling in Love with Love" and "In a Sentimental Mood" are also worth noting.
