The Stockholm Chamber Brass here presents a well-played program of Renaissance music arranged for modern brass, with the pluses and caveats that implies. The music’s fantastic and very well-selected: Susato, Dowland, Monteverdi, Gesualdo. The program itself smartly combines these, moving from lively dances and martial airs to arias and slow works of great beauty. Many tracks add percussion to the mix. The Monteverdi ‘moresca’ (track 25) is irresistible. The brass ensemble plays marvelously throughout, especially in slower, more introspective selections.

The Classic 100 is a highly anticipated annual musical phenomenon on ABC Classic FM. Each year Australians are asked to vote for their favourite pieces within a given theme, and in 2017 they were eager to champion their top classical music of ‘love’. The Classic 100: Love was broadcast on ABC Classic FM over one weekend extravaganza in June 2017, revealing a brilliant selection of favourites alongside some great surprises. Listeners were treated to the drama of opera and the grace of the ballet, the tenderness of a love song and the soundtracks from our favorite romantic movies, and the countdown culminated with the announcement of Australia’s favourite music of love: ‘Au fond du temple saint’ from The Pearl Fishers, which received the most votes by a mile.

Italy’s great musical archaeologist and one of the outstanding improvisers of his country, Gianluigi Trovesi with “Profumo di Violetta” indulges in his love for the emotional drama and musical beauty of Italian opera. (The title simultaneously alludes to the protagonist of Verdi’s famous opera “La traviata” and to the flower’s sweet perfume.) Accompanied by the characteristic North-Italian provincial “banda”, a large wind orchestra with percussion as we find it in the on-stage-music of most Verdi operas, Trovesi takes us on a humorous journey through the history of the genre. It starts with Monteverdi’s “Orfeo”, includes many highlights from “La traviata” before briefly visiting Mascagni and Puccini. The popular and the sublime, irony and unrestrained pathos meet with an improvisational spirit that conveys the pure joy of music making. One of the most unorthodox albums in this year’s release schedule, Trovesi’s opera project is likely to win many enthusiastic listeners among opera lovers and open-minded jazz enthusiasts.
