XL Recordings owner Richard Russell has run one of England’s most feted independent labels for nearly 30 years, so it’s unsurprising that the band he has put together, Everything is Recorded, is a star-studded affair. And tonight, performing in the round on a stage watched over by pixelated artwork of icons from Robert Johnson to the sphinx, an A-list of XL-backed rappers and singers is on hand to realise Russell’s forays into soul, jazz and hip-hop.

An observation van is running surveillance on a high-level Bradford gangster. Suddenly the van is surrounded by men in balaclavas and tied shut. Out comes the can of petrol. It is set alight and the two cops inside barely escape with their lives. This incident is never reported. The gangsters clearly have informants inside the police and alerting the public would undermine the force. Everyone shrugs it off – with so much money in the drugs game, corruption is part and parcel of the whole deal

Alan Yentob follows Wayne as he serves as director at the Venice Dance Biennale, creating a new production with his own company of dancers, and rehearses and opens The Dante Project, a new full-length ballet at the Royal Opera House in London. Wayne was brought up on John Travolta and rave music before encountering the work of Diaghilev and Merce Cunningham, so look out for a little ABBA along the way.
