1945 : l'Amérique vient de remporter la victoire sur le Japon et New York, en liesse, fête le retour de ses héros. Jimmy Doyle, démobilisé, entre au Starlight Club où il lie connaissance avec Francine Evans, elle aussi démobilisée. Grâce à Francine qui y travaille comme chanteuse, Jimmy, saxophoniste dans le civil, se retrouve engagé dans l'orchestre de Frankie Harte qui fait une tournée à travers le pays. Jimmy en prend assez vite la direction. Au cours de la tournée, Jimmy et Francine se marient. Bien que l'orchestre connaisse alors un grand succès, Francine, enceinte, est obligée de rentrer à New York. Après son départ, l'audience de l'orchestre baisse et Jimmy en cède la direction au pianiste, Paul Wilson. A New York, Jimmy et Francine sont éloignés l'un de l'autre par leurs vies proofessionnelles. A la naissance de leur enfant, ils se séparent… Dix ans plus tard, au Starlight Club où elle donne un récital, Francine revoit Jimmy qui lui donne un rendez-vous. Elle hésite puis décide de ne pas y aller, tandis que Jimmy s'en va seul dans les rues de New York.

Martin Scorsese's NEW YORK, NEW YORK is a sparkling, nostalgic look at the big-band era of the 1940s, as well as the MGM musicals of the 1940s and 1950s. The story concerns Jimmy Doyle (Robert De Niro), an aspiring saxophonist who meets and is at first rejected by singer Francine Evans (Liza Minelli). When they continue to bump into each other, a friendship blossoms, followed by romance, and then marriage. All the while, both musicians struggle to succeed at their craft, which begins to put an unbearable strain on their relationship. Eventually, this weight becomes too heavy to handle, leading the couple into a traumatic separation. Scorsese's obvious love for this era of music–as well as cinema–is overflowing throughout the picture, from the set pieces to the costumes to the musical numbers. Most striking is the brutally realistic depiction of a disintegrating marriage, filmed in a series of long, tense takes. De Niro and Minelli jump headlong into their characters, which results in a film that is a challenging viewing experience but emotionally rewarding to the dedicated viewer. As usual, Scorsese's meticulous visual presentation is flawless, as is the film's soundtrack, which recaptures the big-band era with reverence and passion.

Nicholas Payton - Gumbo Nouveau (1996) Music

Possessing a fat tone that is sometimes reminiscent of Freddie Hubbard, by the mid-'90s Payton had become New Orleans' latest significant contribution to jazz. On his second Verve release, Payton interprets and modernizes ten songs associated with his hometown and/or Louis Armstrong. Fortunately, Payton generally retains the flavor and joy of the original versions, even while he transforms much of the music into hard bop. To cite a few examples, "Whoopin' Blues" has parade rhythms, send-offs worthy of Lionel Hampton, and boppish solos, "Way Down Yonder in New Orleans" is taken as a slow and lightly swinging ballad, and "I Gotta Right to Sing the Blues" is turned into a jazz waltz…
