Two records now available as a single CD, these really show off Yo La Tengo's ability to create musical extremes. New Wave Hot Dogs has the firm pop sense and strong songwriting of the debut, but President Yo La Tengo offers up a little more free-form skronk in the ten-minute live version of "The Evil That Men Do," a gloriously squalling, over-the-top crash-and-bash session which proves how liberating and fun sonic dissonance can be. Just in case you don't like that sort of thing, "Evil" also shows up as a straight-ahead folk-rock track. This is a great collection of material that, as well as anything else they have recorded, gets to the heart of what makes this band tick.
With the return of the punks in the mid-'90s came a resurgence of their slightly more commercial rivals, new wave bands. No Doubt found a niche as a new wave/ska band, on the strength of vocalist Gwen Stefani's persona alternately an embrace of little-girl-lost innocence and riot grrrl feminism exemplified on the band's break-out single, "Just a Girl." Formed in early 1987 as a ska band inspired by Madness, the lineup of No Doubt initially comprised John Spence, Gwen Stefani, and her brother Eric.
The Early Days contributes to a musical niche with a compilation that serves as a testament to songs that should remain as they soundtracked numerous brilliant nights out.
By the end of the 1970s, the original triumvirate of hard rock heroes Zeppelin, Purple and Sabbath had either graduated to the arenas of the world, or even split up, whilst the second wave of British heavy rockers, including UFO, Motörhead and Judas Priest, were beginning to fill theatres across the land. Punk exploded in 1976 and 1977, and the DIY ethos that sprang up in its wake soon influenced the grassroots metal bands who had yet to leave their local bars and clubs. Often independently released, some of the bands in this set never made more than one now highly prized and collectable 45 or one-off EP.
Greatest Ever Punk & New Wave brings together some of the most important tracks from this unique period of musical history. Taking material mainly from 1977 to 1982, the album features classic punk, new wave, ska and pop on 3CDs. From the scorching social commentary of Stiff Little Fingers 'Alternative Ulster', to the spooky groove of The Specials 'Ghost Town', Greatest Ever Punk & New Wave pays tribute to the artists - and the music - that shaped a new dawn of popular culture.
Rooney is a vintage pop-rock and garage-inspired combo with deep Californian roots. The musicians draws on some obvious influences – The Beach Boys, Queen, The Cars – to craft its own promising sound. Their music is reminiscent of British Invasion Rock and 1980s Power Pop, and has been compared to The Beatles, Blur, Jellyfish and Cheap Trick. Having toured the nation with acts such as Weezer, Kelly Clarkson and The Strokes, Rooney's official website states that the band "manages to capture elements from the past four decades and make them sound modern today". At this time, the collection includes all of officially released albums.
Silberblick is the first studio album released by Joachim Witt in 1980. This is one of my favorite german records of the time, sounding a bit like a melange of Talking Heads with Velvet Underground - and nevertheless unique. Most german users will know Goldener Reiter and should check Sonne Hat Sie Gesagt - previews for both are included.
