It's easy to overlook Hatfield and the North, because their music refuses to be pompous. Not for them the grand dramatic gestures of Yes, Genesis or ELP. Even when you compare them with other Canterbury bands, they may seem anonymous, since they didn't have a vocalist singing moving little ballads, like Robert Wyatt from Soft Machine or Pye Hastings from Caravan…

The typical jazz fan may not realize that Dave Brubeck has accompanied a number of singers, because most of these recordings took place during his tenure with Columbia. This CD anthology has several tracks which were previously available only on the long out-of-print LP Summit Sessions; they include the impromptu concert collaboration between Tony Bennett and the Dave Brubeck Quartet during an invigorating "That Old Black Magic," and Peter, Paul & Mary join the pianist for "Because All Men Are Brothers" (whose music is adapted from J.S. Bach's "St. Matthew Passion").

"Out Of Sinc" is a collection of pleasant but mostly unremarkable ballads - melodic and well produced but relying upon some hoary old musical and lyrical clichés. Too many clouds in the sky, hearts feeling free and reaching for the stars - lines that really shouldn’t come from the pen of a grown man. Wisely, Sinclair gives most of the lead vocals to a very tuneful young lady called Yammy as his voice is a bit thin and undistinguished, and he is supported by a large cast of musicians including old bandmates Pye, Doug Boyle and Geoff Richardson.

Umphrey's McGee packed Milwaukee's historic Riverside Theater over Halloween weekend 2013. For the sixth year running, the band presented their signature Mash-Up Extravaganza— a unique blend of originals, covers and improv that only Umphrey's can deliver. In keeping with the theme, the band donned multi-character costumes like "Batman and Robin Thicke" and "Silent Bob Seger," as fans in attendance followed suit. After "Night On Bald Mountain" set the stage on All Hallows' Eve, Umphrey's got down to business with mash-up performances like "Don't Fear The Doves, Snucka" and "Papa Can Change A Blurred Stone." The encore performance of "Electric Avenue To Hell," a blend of classic songs by AC/DC and Eddy Grant, raised the bar for the next two nights. Night two's performance showcased the band's untethered explosive energy. Look for Brendan & Jake playing guitar behind their heads; Saxophonist Kevin Sinclair's sit-in for a jazz-inflected jam of "Ringo," and "Wappy Sprayberry" as a massive improv vehicle…
