Following on from the successful 1950’s cool jazz and bop excursions in “Kind of Cool”, “Kind of Spain” is again with an 100% acoustic band. Traditional Spanish music meets jazz. The vibe created by this sextet is introvert, warm and atmospheric, and the listener’s mind might easily drift off… to a roof terrace somewhere in Granada by night, perhaps.

In 2011 Joan Chamorro was commissioned to assemble and lead an orchestra as a tribute to Miles Davis, coinciding with the 20th anniversary of his death. Pere Pons, artistic director of the Jamboree Club and San Miguel Mas i Mas Festival was the one who made the assignment to Chamorro: he wanted it to accompany the publication of a special issue dedicated to the Missouri trumpeter’s imprint left in Catalonia. The effort would result in a unique concert, on August 31, 2011 at the Apolo in Barcelona, that would be recorded and published together with the monograph. The production, recorded here, was called after Miles Davis' and Gil Evans' Sketches of Spain (1960), and was meant to be a hommage to the prince of darkness.

The second Tears for Fears album following Curt Smith's departure finds Roland Orzabal treading water (and self-consciously deep water at that). Long removed from the simple, melodic melancholy of the band's early work and abandoning the mid-period Beatles-influenced pop, Raoul and the Kings of Spain often borders on progressive rock. There's some genuinely pretty music, like the piano-driven ballad "Secrets," with its soaring guitar line, and the gentle "Sketches of Pain." …

This recording couldn't come at a better time, as it presents an artistic commentary on a national and social transition as it unfolds in a new and evolving Cuba. It is truly a work that will be applauded worldwide as the quality of the writing and performance is at a level few artists are capable of achieving today. Paquito D'Rivera provides some of the most inspired improvisation in his career to date and the material chosen for this recording are familiar classics in the popular Latin music tradition. Best Latin Jazz Album of the 39th Annual Grammy Awards.
