For over a century, American musicians were exposed to Cuban rhythms and melodies. In assimilating them they created a very infl uential, new Latin-American sound. This compendium shows how blues, rock and jazz were deeply affected by the golden age of the rumba, son, bolero and mambo styles, which were all in vogue in North America before the Cuban revolution — when people could still freely circulate between the two countries. The USA also left its mark on Cuban musicians of the diaspora, many of which are included here.

This excellent three-disc set contains 64 great songs performed by Dizzy Gillespie and company in varied settings. Odyssey: 1945-1952 chronicles the master trumpeter in small groups, big bands, a session with strings, and also some blues. Among the rare treats on the collection are a full-fledged Gillespie big band score "Interlude (A Night in Tunisia)," performed here with the Boyd Raeburn Orchestra, where Gillespie worked for a couple of weeks at a time in both 1944 and 1945. The inimitable "Groovin' High" is played by the Dizzy Gillespie Sextet of which Charlie Parker, Cozy Cole, and Slam Stewart were members. The song is heard here as a classic bebop contrafact based on the chord progression of "Whispering," which became a million-seller for Paul Whiteman.

Latin rhythms have infiltrated every branch of popular music, but none has had such a wide ranging influence as the rumba. It is this rhythm, combined with the New Orleans second line beat that formed the basis of the Stax and Motown sound and the more complex rhythms of funk in the 1960s. This compilation shows how Latin music first took hold of the blues, adding its irresistible rhythms to jazz and swing during the war years and getting teenagers black and white on to the dance floor. Rumba is everywhere in post-war popular music, from the Clash's Rock The Casbah, Little Richard's Slippin' and Slidin' to the Beatles' Ballad Of John And Yoko. Its 3-3-2 rhythm became an integral part of American music and continues to cast its spell over popular music. Rumba or Rhumba? The 'h' was added after it was introduced to America as a dance in the 1930s; rumba is the music, rhumba is the dance.
