After coming to prominence with his vocals on Chase & Status' All Goes Wrong, which enjoyed heavy rotation on BBC Radio 1 and 2, Tom Grennan went on to meet high expectations with a debut album, Lighting Matches, which hit number five in the UK sales charts in 2018. This second work, Evering Road continues along the same lines, i.e. a rocky but powerful voice, enhanced by sophisticated orchestration that mixes pop and soul, with a sea of violins and piano backdrop, as It Hurts demonstrates perfectly.

One of the most interesting and difficult-to-categorize singers in '60s pop, Gene Pitney had a long run of hits distinguished by his pained, one-of-a-kind melodramatic wail. Pitney is sometimes characterized (or dismissed) as a shallow teen idol-type prone to operatic ballads. It's true that some of his biggest hits – "Town Without Pity," "Only Love Can Break a Heart," "I'm Gonna Be Strong," "It Hurts to Be in Love," and "Twenty Four Hours From Tulsa" – are archetypes of adolescent or just-post-adolescent agony, characterized by longing and not a little self-pity.

Murray's first box set in this series was one of Black Saint/Soul Note's better reissues. And this second volume is it's equal, and in some instances possibly better. The seven albums here span the years 1979 to 1993, and show Murray in different playing styles, but always close to the top of his skills. If you've read this far you're probably familiar with Murray's music, so I'll be brief in my album notes.

Ballads, which really seems to make ballads out of ballads, has been considered both worthy of hanging on the museum wall alongside the other masterpieces and being accorded special merit as the jazz record most used for background music. Since no less a genius than the great French composer Erik Satie invented the concept of background music, this might not be such a contradiction or insult. Only the short "Circles" invites a real comparison with the piano music of Satie; elsewhere you're in extremely extended territory, Paul Bley's desire to play the slowest music in history meshing with a new style of rhythm section accompaniment that sounds like everything from tuning the drums to adjusting the drapes.

Get Closer is the eleventh studio album by singer, songwriter and producer Linda Ronstadt, released in 1982. Get Closer found Ronstadt returning to the genres that had resulted in her commercial and critical success throughout the 1970s, and working again with British musician and producer Peter Asher. Ronstadt was nominated in early 1983 for a Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Performance Female and Best Rock Vocal Performance Female for the album and the song "Get Closer", losing to Melissa Manchester and Pat Benatar respectively. The album did, however, win the Grammy for Best Album Package, an art director's award. The trophy went to well known designers Ron Larson and Kosh.

Although a slew of other bands found greater mass exposure via MTV or the Warped Tour, make no mistake, Screeching Weasel was as important to the 90's punk boom as any band. If one needs proof, this is a great place to start. These 34 tracks cover nine albums, two non-album song compilations, and an EP, along with another compilation track. More importantly, they show a band that shined through simplicity. "Weasel Mania", a clever take on The Ramones' best-of title, crams 34 songs onto one disc, each tune hand picked by Ben Foster himself. This release is essential for both new listeners and longtime fans in search of an one disc with lots of longtime favorites.

Donna Summer became the first Artist signed to the new Geffen Records label in 1980 and the second album released for Geffen is this 1982 classic Donna Summer, which saw production duties by Quincy Jones. This proved to be a masterstroke, as the next album that Quincy produced was Michael Jackson’s Thriller.
The album’s r&b/pop dynamic featured a ‘Who’s Who’ of the recorded music industry, from the album’s lead single ‘Love Is In Control (Finger On The Trigger)’, to the All Star Chorus on the Jon and Vangelis written ‘State Of Independence’, the beautiful ‘The Woman In Me’, the Bruce Springsteen-penned and performed ‘Protection’ and ‘(If It) Hurts Just A Little’, which was heavily sampled in 1999 by Cassius in ‘Cassius 1999’.
