The music of Orlando Gibbons represents the English response to radical changes that stemmed largely from Italy in the age of the birth of opera and a move away from the contrapunctal complexities of previous centuries. Whereas the Italian tended to write gradiose and radical works such of those by Monteverdi, the English tended to write music that was stylistically old-fashioned by the standards of the times, unostentatious with its preference for the sounds of the viol consort that helped make it so intimately poetic and evocative.

Since 1995, the Squirrel Nut Zippers have sacked and plundered the old, weird America then sailed off to further distant lands. They have used New Orleans as their hideout and base of operations. Jean-Lafitte-like the hide in the lee side of the barrier island, receiving goods and masking dark back-channel deals; hiding in cellars or in plain view. On September 25th, fans will be able to gaze into the tea leaves that make up their brand new album: Lost Songs of Doc Souchon to see if they can discern their own destiny.

In the middle of World War Two, the ethnomusicologist Moisei Beregovsky (1892 – 1961) discovered the existence of many songs written by military and civil people who described the misfortune that happened to Russian Jews. At the head of a group of scientists, he started to gather and record them. During a purge orchestrated by Stalin, they were arrested and their equipment was confiscated. These songs, forgotten for decades, have reemerged during the 1990s in the Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine, where they were stored in anonymous boxes. At the start of the following decade, Anna Shternshis—a historian specialized in Yiddish studies—learnt of their existence and associated herself with musician Psoy Korolenko to bring them back to life. Halfway between musical reconstruction and pure creation, the results are convincing. Around Psoy Korolenko, a Russian-Canadian cast makes those gems shine beautifully.

Robbie Basho was one of the big three American acoustic guitar innovators, John Fahey and Leo Kottke being the other two. Basho was the least commercially successful of the three, but his influence and reputation has steadily grown since his untimely death in 1986 at the age of 45. And with good reason; for Basho's deeply spiritual approach, intellectual rigor, and formal explorations (among his goals was the creation of a raga system for American music), present a deeply compelling, multi-faceted artist. Basho was actually a college friend of John Fahey, and his early recordings (like Kottke's) were for Fahey's Takoma label. Following Fahey 's move to Vanguard, Basho followed suit, and released Voice of the Eagle and Zarthus for the label in 1972 and 1974, respectively (his most commercially successful records were made for the Windham Hill label later in the decade)./quote]
