John Sergeant presents a personal film about his childhood hero and lifelong inspiration - Spike Milligan. To mark 10 years since Spike died, John meets the people who knew him best as he uncovers the man behind The Goon Show and reveals Spike's lasting legacy to British comedy. With contributions from Michael Palin, Eddie Izzard and his father John, Noel Fielding, Spike's former manager Norma Farnes, Esther Rantzen, film director Richard Lester and scriptwriter John Antrobus.

In telling Spike's life story this documentary makes extensive use of broadcast material as well as his music, books, poems, war memoirs and writings for children. Most particularly, it utilises correspondence from and to Spike, taken from the BBC Written Archives, much of it never before seen or heard by a wide audience. Spike's correspondence with the BBC covered many topics and was never less than hugely entertaining; this tribute contains the best of it.

Spike Robinson's return to the jazz scene in the early '80s late in his 34-year period as an engineer (during which he only worked part-time as a musician) was a welcome event. His cool tone (very much in the "Four Brothers" tradition of Stan Getz and Zoot Sims) was fully formed, and he could swing as hard as any of the younger players. For this Capri set, Robinson is teamed in London with guitarist Martin Taylor, bassist Dave Green and drummer Spike Wells for mostly concise renditions of eight veteran standards; only Horace Silver's "Opus De Funk" was written after the swing era.
