The lightning rod for Alabaster DePlume’s luminous follow up to the widely-acclaimed 2020 release To Cy & Lee: Instrumentals Vol. 1 was personal. “Someone was going through a thing,” says the Mancunian poet-performer. “I said, ‘go forward in the courage of your love’. And then I thought 'yeah, that's what I need to hear as well’.”
World traveler, nomad, mystic and violist, Eyvind Kang has created several of the most wildly creative CDs on Tzadik. Here he turns his hand to ten tunes from Zorn’s remarkable Book of Angels. Featuring spectacular orchestral arrangements and brilliant studio techniques, Eyvind has put together a CD unlike anything on the Angels series, highlighting the spiritual side of the Angels project, the singular lyricism of Zorn’s compositions and his own richly inventive musical imagination. One of the most personal and gorgeous installments in the Masada series, Alastor is a modern orchestral reading of the mystical charts from the Book of Angels.

The Jazz in Paris: Jazz and Cinema series of Verve CD reissues examines jazz recorded for French film soundtracks in the late '50s and early '60s. This third compilation is the least successful of the first three, as few of the tracks stand on their own merit away from the movies they accompanied. Written for the film Les Loups Dans la Bergerie, the compositions of Serge Gainsbourg might be labeled cool, though they are rarely given time to develop and feature no major soloists in Alan Gouraguer's arrangements. Less successful are Andre Hodeir's somewhat boppish charts for Les Tripe au Soleil, which have extremely distracting scat vocals by Christiane Legrand that frequently seem off-key. The best of the lot is a remake of four songs composed by Freddie Redd for The Connection, which began life as a play…
