Following his stint as leader of the Electric Light Orchestra, singer/guitarist Jeff Lynne forged an equally successful career in the '80s and '90s as a producer with his distinctive sound gracing the latter-day records of many veteran rock & roll legends. Lynne began his career in the late '60s as the frontman of a group called the Idle Race, which recorded the album The Birthday Party for RCA in 1969. In 1970, Lynne accepted an invitation from Move leader Roy Wood to join his revamped band; the two shared a vision of fusing electric rock & roll with classical orchestrations, a concept that eventually transformed the Move into the Electric Light Orchestra (instead of the two groups running concurrently, as had originally been planned).

Rhino's Rock Ballads: The Collection mostly lives up to its promise of cigarette lighter-melting stadium jams, and is probably the only box set where you can find Radiohead, Bread, Kate Bush, and Nickelback in the same green room. Densely populated with as many head scratchers (Fine Young Cannibals' significantly upbeat "She Drives Me Crazy" and Skid Row's teen-rage brooder "18 and Life") as well as genuine arm-waving anthems (Foreigner's "I Want to Know What Love Is" and the lush, Benjamin Orr-led Cars classic "Drive")

Although well regarded by aficionados of space age pop, Hammond organ virtuoso Eddie Layton was even more beloved by visitors to the House That Ruth Built, serving close to four decades as the official organist at baseball's landmark Yankee Stadium. Born October 19, 1925, in Philadelphia, Layton studied music as a child, but majored in meteorology in college. After enlisting in the U.S. Navy during World War II, he first encountered the Hammond in a Naval air station in Linhurst, NJ, and his fate was sealed. After the war Layton studied under the legendary theater pipe organist Jesse Crawford while working the theater circuit himself, eventually landing a steady gig at Radio City Music Hall.
