Considering the intricate details and complex expressionism on the new recording from Ping Machine, it would be a fair assumption that the title of "Easy Listening" was meant as irony. But, really, it’s not, not at all. Because Frédéric Maurin harnesses the myriad of moving pieces and focuses them into a singular focus that makes their 2016 release so very easy to connect with and embrace.

Glasgow drummer and composer Graham Costello returns with his second STRATA album, 'Second Lives', out May 7th on Gearbox Records. Second Lives spans Reichian minimalism, semi-free jazz à la Binker and Moses, polyrhythmic math rock, and pensive, cinematic ambience. The album was recorded straight to tape last summer at RAK Studios with co-producer and engineer Hugh Padgham at the helm, mixed at British Grove, and subsequently mastered in-house at Gearbox. The inspiration and wider themes of Second Lives sit with thoughts of identity, heritage, and Stoicism, as well as the theme of overcoming inner challenges - what you face and the process you go through to get to the other side.

JACK Quartet; Jenny Lin, piano; Orchestra Carbon, David Bloom, conductor; Janáček Philharmonic Orchestra, Peter Rundel, conductor

These pieces demonstrate an overwhelming potency, emerging from their respectively huge contrasts, where minute pitches become assimilated into grinding, juddering walls of near-chaotic overload, where clean cycles of rhythm become overlaid and superimposed into dense strata of complex polyphony. ...Sharp’s (b. 1951) music can be radiant, ethereal, alluring and overwhelming. A magnificent disc.

Ironically, In the Beginning (1974) was the final studio LP Roy Buchanan (guitar) cut during his four year (1970-1974) tenure on Polydor. While definitely mellower than his previous platter, That's What I Am Here For (1974), his fluid fretwork continues to capture and conjure a seemingly infinite number of moods and textures…

The first disc of Grayfolded, titled Transitive Axis, was released in 1994, and the second disc, Mirror Ashes, was released in 1995, both on the Swell/Artifacts label.
