"The Austrian conductor Karl Böhm is one of the towering conductors of the 20th Century. As the embodiment of the long Austro-German musical tradition, he helped to write musical history. This 19-CD set assembles all the extant recordings he conducted for EMI (notably its German Electrola label) over the period 1935 to 1949 in Dresden, Berlin, Vienna and London includes a number of rarities and the world premiere release of a version of Mozart’s Serenata notturna recorded in Vienna in 1947. It was during these years that Böhm cemented his reputation as a major conductor of Austro-German repertoire. Collectors will also be pleased to know that this set contains all the recordings that featured in the now-iconic series of Dresden-themed LP boxes released by EMI to mark Böhm’s 85th birthday in 1979. German violinist Tanja Becker-Bender returns to the Romantic Violin Concerto series along with Hyperion house band the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra conducted by Garry Walker. Volume sixteen features concertos by Busoni and Strauss. In D major, the key of Beethoven's and Brahms's violin concertos, Busoni's Violin Concerto is clearly intended to continue their lineage although it never descends into mere imitation. The seventeen-year-old Strauss wrote his Violin Concerto during his final year at the Ludwigsgymnasium. The work is fairly unknown on the concert platform, but Becker-Bender's interpretation should win it new friends.

Richard Strauss is considered to be both the last ‘Classical’ composer and a champion of modernity. His wide-ranging output stands as a monument to one of the most successful and influential composers of the 20th century. His spirited and compact First Horn Concerto was the product of his teenage years, while the Second Horn Concerto came six decades later, echoing the expressively lyrical and dynamic character of its youthful predecessor. Both of these concertos share the chamber orchestra character of the Four Last Songs in its arrangement by Eberhard Kloke. The Andante in C major and Alphorn in E flat major, originally composed with piano accompaniment, are heard here in arrangements for chamber orchestra by Lars Opfermann.
