From a musical perspective, the Seventies didn’t really begin until 1972, when the sudden appearance of pioneering art-rock adventurers Roxy Music saw them spearhead a new generation of bands making the first genuinely post-Sixties music.

Manfred Alois Segieth, known by his stage name Fancy, is a German singer, songwriter, musician and record producer who was popular in the mid to late 1980s. Segieth's career commenced in 1984 as a European-based pop singer and songwriter. His role as a musician rapidly expanded as a producer, which lead to his music receiving worldwide airplay. The international disco hits "Slice Me Nice" and "Chinese Eyes" reached second place on the US Billboard Dance Charts and the Top 10 USA Billboard for 1985 with "Chinese Eyes" and "Come Inside". Fancy had a number 1 in Spain with "Bolero". A further nine of his singles charted in both the top 10 and top 20 portions of the Media Control Singles Charts, this mainly covered the German charts during the mid to late 80s. "Flames of Love" has received worldwide exposure since 1988; as it was his highest charting hit. Fancy's work include many studio albums and singles as well as compilation and remixed CD's.

Nancy Sandra Sinatra is an American singer and actress. She is the elder daughter of Frank Sinatra and Nancy (née Barbato) Sinatra, and is widely known for her 1966 signature hit "These Boots Are Made for Walkin". Other defining recordings include "Sugar Town", the 1967 number one "Somethin' Stupid" (a duet with her father), the title song from the James Bond film You Only Live Twice, several collaborations with Lee Hazlewood, such as "Jackson", "Summer Wine" and her cover of Cher's "Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)".

On reflection, it's no wonder that so many artists were available for Total Lee: The Songs of Lee Hazlewood. Hazlewood occupies a position in posterity similar to that of the Velvet Underground–ignored by the world at large, but disproportionately adored by fellow musicians. Hazlewood's only glimpse of popular appeal occurred when Nancy Sinatra had a worldwide hit with his "These Boots Are Made For Walking"–a karaoke standard ignored by the 16 artists who appear on this tribute album. What is startling about this fine collection is that a lot of the artists here seem endearingly unable to separate their admiration for Hazlewood's songs from Hazlewood's myth: for most young men who've ever picked up a guitar, Hazlewood's life of meandering from town to town, girl to girl, bottle to bottle, has a certain aspirational quality, and may be the reason why every male artist on this album finds himself, consciously or not, adopting Hazlewood's signature consumptive drawl: The Webb Brothers, Jarvis Cocker and Richard Hawley, Calexico and Erlend Oye are more impersonation than interpretation, but nonetheless engaging.
