[ORIGINAL RECORDING REMASTERED]

In the midst of the late 1970s punk/new wave revolution, England's Supertramp tore a page from the Genesis playbook, suffusing their previously overwrought prog-rock influences and bittersweet hippie optimism gone sour with muscular pop hooks. They eventually became one of the world's foremost rock acts–and later a rich source for contemporary TV commercial music. But while Supertramp peaked quickly, they nonetheless spawned at least two bona fide classic albums–Crime of the Century and Breakfast in America–and a slate of FM radio staples, all of which are included on this near 80-minute anthology. Fully three-quarters of Crime is represented, and rightly so. That 1974 album both stripped down and reinvented the band's sound, centering it around the songs of Rick Davies and Roger Hodgson, pulsing electric piano chords, and distinctively reedy vocals on tense, spare songs like "Bloody Well Right" and "Dreamer." But by the time of the multiplatinum Breakfast, they had refined their edgy prog sensibility to virtual extinction with well-crafted pop hits like "The Logical Song" and "Take the Long Way Home." This well-chosen collection spans a decade, but focuses intently on the five great years that cemented Supertramp's reputation. –Jerry McCulley

After a long break, he launched into his first tour since 1984 and released 1997's live "Rites of Passage" to document the tour. He performs with a full band including his son Andrew, and Supertramp sax player John Helliwell. He then embarked on his first world solo tour in 1998.

Roger Hodgson, singer/songwriter, musician & founding member of the successful group Supertramp, left the band in 1983 after their tour for "Famous Last Words" was completed (creative differences with Supertramp co-founder Rick Davies were said to be the cause of Roger's exit). He made his solo debut in 1984 with "In The Eye Of The Storm," and, if you love Roger's work with the 'Tramp, then you'll most certainly love his solo stuff as well. "In The Eye Of The Storm" features all the musical trademarks that Hodgson brought to Supertramp's table; his classic falsetto voice, his amazing keyboard & guitar work, and his knack for writing fabulous melodies and dramatic musical elements. "Had A Dream (Sleeping With The Enemy)" is a Hodgson classic, with some clever, thinly-veiled lyrics about leaving Supertramp and striking out on his own. "In Jeopardy" is my personal favorite from the album, a brilliantly catchy piano-thumper. Also worth mentioning is the beautiful song "Lovers In The Wind," and the astonishing album-closer, "Only Because Of You," a truly haunting, memorable number. I can only guess that Roger Hodgson named his debut album "In The Eye Of The Storm" because that's precisely the situation he found himself in at the time, leaving a mega-successful band to forge his own path. Some would say that he was crazy to leave Supertramp, but, as Roger sings in "Had A Dream," "But it's time, gotta take a stance/'Cause I won't get a second chance/And I know now I have to make it alone." And he certainly has. Roger Hodgson's "In The Eye Of The Storm" is a most excellent album.

"Open The Door," released in 2000, is ex-Supertramp singer Roger Hodgson's first solo album of studio material since 1987's "Hai Hai" (there was also his 1997 release, "Rites Of Passage," but that was a live album). This record is a brilliant return for Roger, filled with his same magic touch for melody, catchy hooks, and powerful, dramatic rock that made his work with Supertramp so special. Great songs from end to end, like the beautiful "Along Came Mary," the poppish "Hungry," the simple-but-memorable "The Garden," and the awesome extended pieces, "Death And A Zoo" and the title song, the latter of which reminds me of the old Supertramp favorite, "Fool's Overture." Hodgson's classic falsetto voice remains in pristine condition, his playing & songwriting simply wonderful. "Open The Door" is a must for the Roger Hodgson/Supertramp faithful.
