The latest in-store compilation from Starbucks Entertainment is the perfect summer sampler, an 18-track collection of old and new surf tunes, from classics of the genre like Dick Dale's "Miserlou," the Marketts' "Out of Limits," and the Chantays' "Pipeline" to tracks from surf revivalists like Laika & the Cosmonauts' "N.Y. '79," making this set a nice introduction to all that is surf and summer.
Rhino manufactured this CD and it was only sold in Starbucks stores. These are the original recordings of mostly instrumental tracks.
In the half-century since he began his reign as King of the Surf Guitar, Dick Dale has remained one of rock’s most innovative and influential axemen. A bold pioneer in the use of speed, volume and sonic texture, the charismatic Dale invented surf music, and in the process permanently altered the role of the electric guitar in rock ’n’ roll. Of all the surf guitarists who would follow in Dale’s wake, none could match his prodigious technique, his fierce showmanship or his restless inventiveness…

While not particularly a hardcore surf collection, this disc certainly outlines its virtues, and the tunes were long enough to display guitar proficiency, but short enough to prevent self-indulgence and repetition.

Obviously, then, surf music isn't for surfers. If it were, Rhino would put out a greatest-hits EP instead of a four-disc box set. Cowabunga! is all the permanent-wave stuff most people will ever need.

Inspired by "that sound", Martin Cilia, guitarist with legendary Australian surf band, The Atlantics, has taken a step into the solo spotlight with the release of "Revenge Of The Surf Guitar". This 16 track CD is his tribute to early sixties surf guitar music…
