Matt Scullion is one of the most respected singer/songwriters to come out of Australia in recent years with a swag of hit songs to his credit. Matt’s sound is definitely his own, but his influences vary from The Eagles to Ryan Adams to Bruce Springsteen to Steve Earle with a little bit of James Taylor thrown in for good measure – sounding like none of them, but channeling all of them. He has written with the best and had his songs recorded by the likes of Cold Chisel, Lee Kernaghan, Travis Collins, Sara Storer, Adam Harvey, The Viper Creek Band, Tania Kernaghan, Drew McAlister, Amber Lawrence, Troy Kemp, The Wolfe Brothers and Jayne Denham to name but a few, with 16 of those songs going to the number 1 position on the country music charts.

On his brilliant 2015 debut album, Coming Home, Texas singer/songwriter Leon Bridges invited comparisons to Sam Cooke and Otis Redding with his authentic take on soul. Good Thing, his 2018 follow-up, finds Bridges leaving the ’50 and ’60s, instead embracing ’70s icons like The Stylistics (“Bet Ain’t Worth the Hand”) and Chic (“You Don’t Know”). More surprises come in “If It Feels Good (Then It Must Be)” and “Bad Bad News,” contemporary jams that show he can swag it out with the likes of Usher and Pharrell too. Bridges' warm tenor is sturdy and smoky as mesquite wood as he combines deep emotions and nimble wordplay on “Beyond,” “Forgive You,” and “Georgia to Texas”—a moving story of his family’s history.

Link played as a sideman on countless 50s / early 60s sessions, with / for his brothers and a host of friends - many of which are now long forgotten obscurities, of interest only because of his involvement. Disc 1 of this compilation presents Link's own releases between 1958-62, delivered in his fiercely unmistakeable style; Disc 2 presents a goodly selection of Link's session work from 1956-62, including his own first 45 (which, stylistically, couldn't be further removed from the hairy-chested 'Rumble'), alongside a couple of dozen or so 'guest appearances' and even a couple of 'solo' 45s, which actually came out credited to older brother Vern.

With a sound that’s described as “B.B. King sharing a Scotch with Booker T”, what Evan Whetter & Erica Graf set out to create was a contemporary Australian act that was steeped in the blues, credible and relevant. Just a few short years later, with a swag of awards under their belt, a body of work that boasts four albums, an EP and numerous festival appearances around the country, although still emerging, they’re well on their way to achieving just that.

Surf Rock, Rock and Roll | Label: Sundazed Music

Compilation drawing principally from their Aertaun 45s and Josie LP, with the addition of three previously unissued cuts (including two Link Wray covers), a number ("Charge of the Tornadoes") previously available only on a Sundazed release, and a 25-minute interview with the group, conducted in the 1990s. The Tornadoes were an above-average, though not upper-echelon, Californian surf band, notable for writing much of their material and possessing one of the better early surf guitarists in Roly Sanders. The vocals are kept to a minimum, which is a good thing. The interview is pretty interesting, including a couple unexpected stories about how a young Frank Zappa helped out on some of their vintage recordings.

In the early '70s, Paul Kossoff was a much-heralded young guitarist from a much-heralded young rock band called Free. In a short period of time, Kossoff and his cohorts punched out some classic rock. A brief solo career followed for the inspired axeman, but his untimely death in 1976 from a drug-related heart attack put an end to the potential that his peers and fans were looking forward to seeing fully realized. All one can do is celebrate and enjoy what this stylistically unique and utterly precocious musician left behind, and this 17-track disc, which culls Kossoff's best work from both his days with Free and as a solo performer, is an excellent way to do just that. A player who made his name with unusual phrasings, brazen fills, and an intuitive use of sustained notes – and rarely going for fretboard-smoking speed – Kossoff had a prototypical signature sound. His ability to do the work of two guitarists – Free, for the most part, was a barebones guitar/bass/drums/singer outfit – was one of his greatest strengths and, despite a good deal of studio dubbing, you can hear it in places on this album. The best cuts are definitely the eight Free tracks, which include the raunchy "The Hunter," the good-time rock-blues of "Ride on a Pony," the dramatic "Fire and Water" and "Mr. Big," and the band's all-time classic, "All Right Now".
