The Sun Has Seen (2006)

Movie fans have become accustomed to the physical representation of terror resembling a hulking, merciless, unrelenting beast of a man, a Michael Myers or Jason Voorhees type that stalks his victims with heavy footsteps, a menacing demeanor, a large bladed weapon, and some sort of supernatural invulnerability. The four films presented in The Omen Collection portray a villain just as dastardly, invulnerable, and horrific as any masked madman, but instills these terrifying attributes not in a beastly killing machine, a wise-cracking villain, or even a criminal mastermind, but inside the body of a boy, a teenager, a man. Young, adorable, carefree Damien Thorn, with nothing more than a stare, a smile, an innocent countenance, grows into one of cinema's more enduring powerhouses of evil over the course of three films, a character both at once charming and repulsive, the very definition of innocence, yet with a future of Biblical importance, a destiny that nothing – or nobody – can alter. He is pure evil, the antichrist, the final representation of terror, an abomination so tremendous that even the greatest of the horror icons shiver in his presence. 20th Century Fox's The Omen Collection contains four films bundled together, three representing the original Omen trilogy (1976-1981) along with the 2006 remake of the original classic. Not included here, but available in a previously released DVD boxed set, is 1991's made-for-television film Omen IV: The Awakening.

In the tradition of The Great Escape and The Deer Hunter, Rescue Dawn is Werner Herzog's take on the pulse-pounding POW genre. Unlike most such efforts, however, his isn't just based on a true story, it's a remake of his 1997 documentary Little Dieter Needs to Fly. German-born Dieter Dengler (Christian Bale, who first made his mark in Steven Spielberg’s prison camp drama Empire of the Sun) has longed to pilot a plane since he was a boy. When he joins the Navy during the Vietnam War, he gets his wish. Then he's shot down over Laos. Though he survives, Dengler is captured by the Pathet Lao. Through his internment, he meets Duane Martin (Steve Zahn in his finest performance), with whom he becomes fast friends. While Dengler is arrogant and resourceful, Martin is patient and humble. With Dengler's assistance, the prisoners escape, but the untamed wilderness turns out to be just as dangerous (cinematographer Peter Zeitlinger ably captures its cruel beauty). Those who've seen Little Dieter know how this tale ends. Suffice to say, Herzog's reenactment makes for rousing entertainment. If the film has a flaw, it's that the rah-rah finale plays like something from out of a mainstream sports movie. That quibble aside, the actors, including Jeremy Davies as a delusional campmate and Toby Huss as a fellow flyer, are aces. And Herzog, who's been concentrating on nonfiction, like Grizzly Man, proves he can direct a Hollywood-style action epic with the best of 'em.

THE BRITISH INVASION: The British Invasion was the signalling event of a gigantic social change that progressed through the decade, a decade in which each year seemed to contain ten years' worth of changes. it was an effect of historical and technological changes outside the purview of a CD review. It may be seen partially as a sub-generation of youth wanting something new of their own rather than inheriting their older sibling's teen scene. In the U.S. some feel the assassination of J.F.K. is often seen as a catalyst. Though Beatlemania was an international phenomenon, it can't be completely discounted as a factor. When it happened it was sudden and it almost totally obliterated the previous pop scene. The few who survived (Gene Pitney, Lesley Gore, Jan & Dean, Beach Boys, Four Seasons, Elvis) mostly had a final big hit or two in '64 then remained in a diminished way never having a Top 10 hit again. Only the Beach Boys and Four Seasons got through relatively unscathed. Another part of the big change in 1964 was the rise of Motown which obliterated most older R&B acts as much as the British Invasion did pop, a fact that is often ignored.

This triple-CD set devoted to Alma Cogan won't supplant the four-disc set issued a couple of years earlier by EMI, but it does contain a different breakdown of her music with a couple of tracks – most notably, her rendition of the Beatles' "Help!" – that aren't on the larger set. Each disc is broken down chronologically, into "The Fifties," "The Sixties," and "The Standards," respectively, and while John Lennon might've been amused by it, Paul McCartney will probably be downright impressed that the Beatles songs that Cogan – a beloved personal friend of the band, but a half-generation older and out of a completely different performing tradition – embraced during the final phase of her career, are presented on that last disc, alongside the work of George Gershwin, Harold Arlen, Arthur Freed, and Nacio Herb Brown; as Cogan herself might've quipped, all "jolly good company."

Hide from the Sun is the sixth studio album by the Finnish rock band The Rasmus. It was originally released in mainland Europe, the United Kingdom, Scandinavia and Japan on 12 September 2005. It was later released in the United States on 10 October 2006, and featured a selection of B-side remixes and special edition bonus tracks. The US edition also included the previously unseen video for "Immortal". The name "Hide from the Sun" is a quotation from the song "Dead Promises". The album cover was painted by guitarist Pauli Rantasalmi. It received Platinum status in Finland and sold more than 15,000 in the UK and 20,000 in the US. Overall the album has sold over 500,000 copies worldwide.
