Blues | Delta Groove Productions 19 April 2011

Two-time Grammy nominated vocalist Tracy Nelson makes her Delta Groove debut with a strong return to her roots on her latest effort Victim of the Blues. Although best known for her work with the blues rock group Mother Earth in the late 1960's, Nelson has always had an affinity for the real deep traditional blues art form as evidenced on her very first album, Deep Are The Roots, recorded in Chicago back in 1964. Victim of the Blues finds Nelson fully embracing her blues and gospel roots on an inspired program of material that features songs by Jimmy Reed, Otis Spann, Howlin' Wolf, and Ma Rainey, along with appearances by special guests Angela Strehli and Marcia Ball.

At the time of its release, Modern Vampires of the City was touted as a "deeper" offering from Vampire Weekend. While that's true to an extent, that also downplays the equally heartfelt and clever songs on their first two albums. What is undeniable is that Modern Vampires is a lot less obviously showy than the band's previous work. They trade in Contra's bright eclecticism for a less audacious production style and smaller instrumental palette: guitar, organ, harpsichord, and the occasional sample combine into a rarefied sound that suggests a more insular version of their debut, and the band bookends the album with some of its most literal and insular chamber pop on "Obvious Bicycle" and "Young Lion."

The work of Swedish artist Billie Lindahl, she seems to capture a certain drama, a certain glamorous melancholy that feels entirely enriching. Sonically diverting, the material matches lush moments of wonder to some genuinely unsettling elements, with the interplay between these two poles providing the record’s central energy.

Coral Egan’s return to the studio after five years has yielded an album so personal that it names. The singer, assisted by songwriter-producer Albert Chambers, has crafted a 10-song set that flirts with cinéma-vérité in its examination of her private life with daughter Lola and partner Vahé Yegoyan. Both are namechecked — along with the family dog — in the sunny, effervescent urban soul track Soul Sunday, which celebrates weekend domestic bliss.

Earthy, raw, and evocative, the genre-bending sound of Kela Parker channels the roots of folk music, "but like folk music from a country you've never heard of before." Like her unusual chord progressions, the singer, composer and multi-instrumentalist followed a winding, serpentine path to arrive at her distinct sound. Growing up in a family of classical and folk players, as a young musician she gravitated equally to Joni Mitchell’s alternate guitar tunings as to the dramatic piano ballads of Rachmaninoff and Chopin.

Wonderful album from the Japanese pianist Makoto Terashita featuring Bob Berg and Yoshiaki Masuo. 3 excellent originals from Terashita plus a couple of standards. Howard Stanislevic was good friends with Makoto during his time in NYC and wrote this to me about Terashita and the album : In 1977 or '78, Makoto was in NYC along with Shoji and others such as Terumasa Hino. I became good friends with Makoto and played with him often. Had him over my apt. and played acoustic guitar (my Japanese-made Epiphone steel-string flat-top) and piano in my living room, in fact. We also played in my friend's basement with other local cats from Queens. His wife was pregnant when they went back to Japan. We ate in ChinaTown together once, and she even cooked for me once in the apt. they were subletting. He's a very nice guy and a true artist! Best piano player I ever played with. He came here to play, learn and make his album, and washed dishes in restaurants to make ends meet! He probably didn't get much sleep while he was here, but he knew enough English to get by.
