The first four albums by the American instrumental rock band the Ventures. While the Ventures are considered by many to be the greatest 'surf band', and it is true that they helped define the musical genre as much as anyone, they are much more than that. Their instrumental virtuosity, experimentation with guitar effects, and unique sound laid the groundwork for innumerable groups, earning them the moniker the 'Band that Launched a Thousand Bands.'

Few listeners need to dig deeper than a greatest hits collection for The Ventures, but this early effort is an arguable exception. The group embellished their trademark sleek guitar instrumentals with creepy, then-futuristic production effects, sounding at times like a mix of surf music and the incidental music to Star Trek. The ghostly, theremin-like sounds on several tracks are actually produced by top session player Red Rhodes on steel guitar…

This CD is a real jewel. It's been years since the Ventures have put together anything close to the quality that made them famous. The tasteful arrangements and orchastration rings of the days of Walk Don't Run, Perfidia, Etc…

The members of the surf band supreme seem to think it is best to stay in the background, personality-wise. For the cover art of this album, they hide behind a dish in a tight yellow sweater on the front, and behind an even more attractive Mosrite guitar on the back. Musically they have some terrific moments, such as the well-known title track and an almost grungy "The Creeper."…

Fans of this group will want to know about the cover art, in this case a photo of a blonde tossing her hair around. Is she supposed to be Southern? That would tie in with what seems to be the theme of the "More Memphis" subtitle of this disc. But actually there is no such theme or subtitle, just a style of typesetting that is done in such a way that most people will look and comment, "Oh, this is one where they do their Memphis concept." …

Not the first but definitely the most popular rock instrumental combo, the Ventures scored several hit singles during the 1960s – most notably "Walk-Don't Run" and "Hawaii Five-O" – but made their name in the growing album market, covering hits of the day and organizing thematically linked LPs. Almost 40 Ventures' albums charted, and 17 hit the Top 40. And though the group's popularity in America virtually disappeared by the 1970s, their enormous contribution to pop culture was far from over; the Ventures soon became one of the most popular world-wide groups, with dozens of albums recorded especially for the Japanese and European markets. They toured continually throughout the 1970s and '80s – influencing Japanese pop music of the time more than they had American music during the '60s.
