Three Pieces

Sony Classcial celebrates the art of Sviatoslav Richter (1995-1997) – one of the 20th century’s greatest pianists – with the first-ever release of his complete Columbia Masterworks and RCA Victor live and studio recordings in an 18 CD original jacket edition, underneath Richter’s legendary five October 1960 Carnegie Hall recitals.

One of Britain’s best-known musicians, Nicholas Daniel OBE won the BBC Young Musician competition in 1980, after which he quickly established his career, travelling all over the world, broadcasting widely, and making his début at the BBC Proms. He has premièred hundreds of works for the oboe and made many critically acclaimed recordings of both new and familiar music. As a soloist he has appeared with the world’s leading orchestras, performing a huge range of repertoire and premièring works written specially for him by many of the world’s greatest composers. He is a founder member of the Britten Sinfonia, Haffner Wind Ensemble, Orsino Ensemble, and Britten Oboe Quartet.

Renowned as a virtuoso jazz clarinetist and legendary bandleader, Benny Goodman is also remembered for the works he commissioned from leading composers of his day. Poulenc’s strikingly beautiful Clarinet Sonata was his last composition, while Bernstein’s was his first published piece. Both Gershwin and Stravinsky added their distinctive stamp to the swing vibe which was all the rage in the early 20th century. The jazz flavour of Morton Gould’s Benny’s Gig is heightened by the unusual coupling of clarinet and double bass, while pungent folk rhythms define Bartók’s virtuoso Contrasts.

With the exception of a few of Bach's more famous compositions, Rameau's Pieces de Clavecin have received more attention over the years than any other Baroque keyboard works–and for good reason: they're extraordinarily diverse, imaginatively conceived, consummately stylish, and most importantly, they demand interpretive prowess on the part of the performer. For many harpsichordists a Rameau cycle represents what a Beethoven symphony cycle would for most conductors–the crowning achievement of the genre, since what a performer brings to Rameau reveals not only his level of technical virtuosity but even more so his ability to creatively exploit the infinite opportunities inherent in Rameau's innovative scores.

Boireann features two compositions specifically crafted for this release. “Five Études for Two Flutes” reimagines earlier pieces for two violins, demonstrating Buckley’s ability to transpose musical ideas across different instrumental settings. “In Memoriam Doris Keogh,” a three-movement piece for flute and piano, reflects the broad musical interests of Buckley’s flute teacher, Doris Keogh, offering a touching tribute to her influence.
