One of the albums that did really well in our poll of 2003 was this debut album of Double Cross, a UK based five piece melodic rock band, consisting of musicians with a wealth of experience, both in the studio and on stage! Double Cross was formed from the ashes of the Leicester-based hard rock band Liar, when guitar player Stephen Kelly and drummer Steve Philpotts were joined by keyboard player Pete Lakin and bass player Gareth Franks.

Pianist Oscar Peterson's final Pablo album (after a countless amount of appearances as both a leader and a sideman) features his quartet (which at the time included guitarist Joe Pass, bassist David Young and drummer Martin Drew) on the second of two CDs (along with Oscar Peterson Live) recorded during an engagement at Los Angeles's Westwood Playhouse in Nov. 1986. For the well-rounded set Peterson performs two of his originals, the blues "Soft Winds," a solo ballad medley and, as a climax, a burning version of "On the Trail."

What Freelon is building is not just a castle of love, but an expanded repertoire for jazz singers' - The Washington Post. Multi Grammy nominated vocal artist Nnenna Freelon is back, delivering her eleventh album after a decade-long hiatus from the studio. With Time Traveler, she offers a celebration of love and a prayer of hope for those living with loss. The sessions for the album stretched over two years, between 2018 and 2020, coinciding with the loss of Freelon's soulmate and husband of forty years, Phil Freelon, to ALS. Freelon draws from her & Phil's shared love of jazz and rhythm and blues, to step through an imagined doorway where past, present and future collide. From the album's centerpiece, a medley of Marvin Gaye classics, to standards such as 'Come Rain or Come Shine' and 'Moon River,' or her self-penned title song, Freelon reminds us of the grace and elegance that naturally accompanies her approach to interpreting melody.

Although her career seems to have been more as a media sensation than as a musician at times, British-born singer, songwriter, and actress Hazel O'Connor has stayed active and productive since her breakthrough role as Kate in the 1980 film Breaking Glass. The soundtrack album for Breaking Glass, which O'Connor wrote, was a huge U.K. hit and spawned several singles, launching her musical career, although she continued to act on British TV and in several stage productions while maintaining an active touring schedule with her band Megahype. Among her many albums are the 1980 debut, Breaking Glass, that same year's Sons & Lovers, 1981's Cover Plus, 1984's Smile, 1993's To Be Freed and Over the Moon…Live, 1995's Private Wars, 1997's Live in Berlin, 1998's 5 in the Morning, 2000's Beyond the Breaking Glass, 2002's Acoustically Yours, 2003's "best of" A Singular Collection, 2005's Hidden Heart and the double-disc Fighting Back, and a 2008 version of Smile. Throughout her career, O'Connor has used the tremendous pressure and scrutiny that accompanied her sudden fame as a central metaphor in her work, detailing the often-baffling complexities of modern life in a media-driven world.

Well known on Broadway for her roles in Chess, Les Misérables, and Sunset Boulevard, Judy Kuhn recorded her first solo album in 1995 with this tribute to Jule Styne. Kuhn has a striking, exceptional voice as well as an earnest approach to a lyric that makes you feel as if you're seeing straight into her heart. Songs range from the obligatory "The Party's Over" and "Everything's Coming Up Roses" to the faux-art song "I Said No." Two of the more unusual settings are "You'll Never Get Away from Me" with a rumba beat and the normally torchy "Music That Makes Me Dance" as a fast waltz; both work due to the skillful arrangements of Michael Skloff and the marvelous artistry of Judy Kuhn. – David Horiuchi

Genre: Vocal-Jazz
Ann Hampton Callaway is one of the top cabaret singers of the past decade. She has always been influenced a bit by jazz, and this 1997 release was her first full jazz recording. Callaway has a haunting voice and, as with most cabaret singers, a great respect for the lyrics she interprets; her singing on "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" is a bit eerie. Pianist Kenny Barron, Bob Mintzer on tenor and soprano, and trumpeter Randy Brecker all get a generous amount of solo space, while bassist Jay Leonhart and percussionist George Jinda are fine in support; considering the high quality of her sidemen, it is a major compliment to the singer to say that her vocals do not cause the set to sag or the listener to lose this interest. On "All Blues" and "Old Devil Moon" in particular, she shows the potential of becoming a significant jazz singer in the future if she sticks to this path. Strangely enough, an intriguing original blues (clocking in around four-and-a-half minutes) is included at the end of the program, but not mentioned on the back cover or in the liners. Recommended.

A Time For Love is a wonderful snapshot of this rapidly developing artist. There are many highlights on this recording. One of them is "On A Misty Night", an elegant song written by Tadd Dameron. It's a perfect composition for Erena and the group. She tips her hat to Sonny Stitt weaving dynamic lines into the fabric of the song. The solos on this tune are wonderful from everyone in this strong crew of first-rate musicians. Listen to Lewis Nash's ride cymbal throughout this track and you will understand why he is considered one of the best!
