Time Cop

Cop in the Hood is fantastic. It is engrossing and exciting and real. Not just that it is non-fiction, but that so many issues Moskos talks about (motivation of beat cops, motivation of police departments, training, resources, the war on drugs) affects so much of our lives. These are our tax dollars, our cities and our citizens. I was pleased to learn that Moskos found little corruption in the Baltimore police department and distressed to learn about million dollar blocks, single city blocks where taxpayers spend one million dollars each year to incarcerate citiens who live there for various (usually drug) crimes. For that money, Moskos observes, we could have one full time cop stationed on that block 24 hours a day, including vacations and sick days. Would that cop make things safer on that block than the war on drugs? "It would be interesting to see," observes Moskos. If you like The Wire or are interested in cops or drugs, I cannot recommend this enough.

After a clumsy operation trying to capture a drug dealer, the N.Y.P.D Detectives Jimmy Monroe and Paul Hodges are suspended for one month by their Captain Romans. Jimmy decides to sell his rare baseball card to pay for his daughter's expensive wedding while his jealous partner believes that his wife is cheating on him with their next-door neighbor. When Jimmy sells his card to a memorabilia store, the place is burgled by two small-time thieves and the detective loses his card. They track down the thieves.

Made the year before his death, Jean-Pierre Melville’s final film and his third with Alain Delon after Le Samouraï and Le Cercle Rouge is the director’s most extreme and underrated gangster movie. Parisian police commissioner Coleman (Delon) is not a happy man, but he does what he can to get through each day. Coleman finds solace in his affair with Cathy (Catherine Deneuve), who also happens to be the girlfriend of Coleman’s friend, Simon (Richard Crenna), the head of a gang of daring criminals. As the commissioner’s pursuit of the gang intensifies, so does the rivalry between the two men.

This is different then the usual undercover cop movie.The main character starts off as a normal HK cop working the beat until he decides to follow a suspicious character into a cafe, the guy who they are following freaks and a gun fight ensues resulting in a lot of bloodshed. The guy who they were following was a nobody in the eyes of the triads and gets away due to the fact that the main character is in shock to see what he has just done. He hates his salary as a patrol man and can't even afford to take his girlfriend out to dinner,he becomes involved with a triad boss and is given the choice to go undercover. Now this is where it is different instead of the viewer being forced to view the cliched bring the bad guys down and take them to justice, the viewer gets to see a man fly high and not want to come down. During the film we often bump in to the crook he chased into the cafe at the beginning of the movie he screws him over every time which effects him seriously at the end of the film( I won't spoil). There are many fresh situations that are new and creative for example when the main character first gets involved with the triads he is sent on a mission to rescue his in debt gambling addicted wife from crooks in Macau who will only let her go if he has sex with her and gives them a good show.The acting is excellent,good plot (especially the sub story between he head triad and his wife).I give the film ****/**** for originality that never ceased to amaze me, a great HK film.

Noted Hong Kong action director Johnny To spins this ultra-cool cat and mouse game between a very tenacious cop and a super thief with 72 hours to live. After brilliantly swiping diamonds from an insurance company, a master criminal (Andy Lau) inveigles Inspector Ho (Lau Ching-wan) into being his unwitting accomplice. Later, when the two confront each other, the thief has another trick up his sleeve.
