This wonderful DVD features Ella Fitzgerald, one of the great divas of jazz singing. This performance consists of the second half of a 1983 Tokyo concert. We begin with a set presenting Ella backed by her regular trio with Paul Smith on piano. The accompaniment is then augmented to a quartet with the addition of the great guitarist Joe Pass. The singer and guitarist had made a few unique albums together, and their magical chemistry can be seen here on an Ellington medley and a version of the Carmichael evergreen “Georgia on My Mind’. For a big finale, a number of jazz stars (Clark Terry, J.J. Johnson, Zoot Sims, Oscar Peterson…) join them on the classic “Flying Home”, ending the concert in the spirit of the great jazz jam sessions.

In 1963, Anita O'Day was still under contract to Verve when she recorded this album for a Japanese television special. Rare in O'Day's catalog (she has very few live records between the '40s and '70s), it's an excellent chance to hear one of the most breath-taking, free-swinging jazz vocalists appearing in a setting even more loose than her great Verve dates. The results, though, aren't quite perfection – yes, O'Day is in great voice (despite a little grit to her vocals), while the songs and arrangements are great too, but there's no response from the audience available on this recording (even when she's egging them on). Songs cut off and the sound quality isn't up to par for the digital age. A little more attention to detail by the compilers would have made this a great performance, instead of one that's recommended only for those who can't get enough Anita O'Day.

It is not obvious looking at the outside of this CD but the music from this live performance is also included in Art Pepper's 16-CD Galaxy set. However those Pepper fans unable to afford the larger box are advised to acquire this Dreyfus single CD for the altoist is heard in superb form. Accompanied (and inspired) by pianist George Cables, bassist Tony Dumas and drummer Billy Higgins, Pepper stretches out on six superior pieces that are highlighted by "Besame Mucho," "Straight Life" and one of the greatest versions ever recorded of "Over the Rainbow." ~ AllMusic

SUPERB JAPANESE BROADCAST RECORDING FROM THIN LIZZY IN 1980 Formed in Dublin in 1969, prior to the emergence of U2 in the early 1980s, Thin Lizzy remained the Emerald Isle s favourite and most successful rock band worldwide. In 1975 the band recorded their breakthrough album Jailbreak, which began an era of great success for Lizzy, which continued until their break-up in 1983. By 1980, guitarist Gary Moore had quit the band, and while Midge Ure helped out on some live shows, for the recording and release of Chinatown, in October 80, Snowy White had joined the line-up on lead guitar. In the wake of the album s release Thin Lizzy went out on tour and between September and October they performed several shows in Japan. The finest of these was played at Nakano Sunplaza, on 25th September 1980. Recorded live for FM Radio broadcast across the country, the concert remains a favourite among Japanese fans, and this remarkable gig can now he heard by Lizzy enthusiasts worldwide as this CD presents the full concert in its entirety.
