This 1977 trio session reunites jazz bassist Ron Carter with pianist Herbie Hancock and drummer Tony Williams, the rhythm section from Miles Davis's second great quintet. The Penguin Guide to Jazz has called this Carter's best album; a collection of hard driving, improvised acoustic jazz by three of the best players in the business.

The all-star rhythm section for the former Miles Davis Quintet is represented here in a trio format. Herbie Hancock's piano playing is excellent, Tony Williams provides a good albeit gentle backdrop on the drums, but the real focus is Ron Carter's superb bass playing, in all of it's gooey grandeur. Ron Carter reeeaaallly shines on this album, his playing is the main focus of the session & every minute of listening time is to that of an acoustic bass virtuoso! Ron Carter on this date does not at all play electric but rather shows off his great chops on a contrabass with a sterling supportive cast.

The first V.S.O.P. tour triggered a flood of recording activity in July 1977, but only a fraction of it was released in the U.S. This session, recorded in San Francisco just days before the Quintet concerts in Berkeley and San Diego, finds Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, and Tony Williams mixing it up sans the horns – and the results are more reflective and cerebral than the full Quintet concerts.
