Who better to perform a further instalment in the exploration of Spanish Baroque musical life on record than Emilio Moreno and El Concierto Español, whose latest Glossa project tackles the dramatic work Iphigenia en Tracia by one of the leading lights of the time, José de Nebra! Having recently also given us readings of popular musical comedies from the end of the 18th century (La Tirana contra Mambrú) and a royal marriage commemoration by Antonio Caldara when in Barcelona at the start of it (Il più bel nome), Moreno now looks to the middle of that century when Nebra was attracted to one of Euripides' Iphigenia stories for one of his mythological zarzuelas.

This recording provides an opportunity to discover a forgotten Baroque operatic treasure, a zarzuela, the key dramatic and musical genre of the Spanish Golden Age. Sumptuous choruses, poignant arias and folksongs blend in a rich and spectacular narrative, whose music was falsely attributed to Antonio Literes before Sebastián Durón (1660-1716) was acknowledged as its composer in 2009! Another peculiarity of the work is that it is sung by seven sopranos, who are even given the roles of Apollo, Neptune and the monster Triton. Only the part of an old man, the seer Proteus, is assigned to a tenor. Ana Quintans in the title role, Isabelle Druet, Anthea Pichanick, Caroline Meng and Cyril Auvity are among the cast of this colourful zarzuela, whose modern stage premiere in 2019 enjoyed great success.

When one approaches the music of the eighteenth century that was performed at the Spanish court of the Palacio de la Zarzuela (which in shortened from then gave the whole “zarzuela” genre its name), whether by composers born in Spain or by foreigners who had settled there, the first impression is one of surprise. For here we find ourselves confronted with magnificent music that follows Italianate models, like all works of the period, yet contributes original elements specific to the country that gave it birth: above all the theatrical style, the inclusion of characteristic rhythms, and the richness of the texts, taken from great writers of the time.

Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo - premiered in 1607 at the Ducal Palace in Mantua - is a unique masterpiece in its way of thinking and representing music that never ceases to inspire the greatest.Emiliano Gonzalez Toro, at the heart of his ensemble I Gemelli, signs his third recording for naïve with this luxuriant reading refocused around the voice, which exalts both the aesthetics inherited from the Renaissance and the modernity of a virtuoso score. This production, hailed on the stages of Paris and Toulouse at the end of 2019, has the singularity of being conducted ‘by the voice’ by the tenor, who plays the title role while directing singers and instrumentalists. Emiliano Gonzalez Toro displays his care - not only for himself but also for the ten soloists who surround him - with richly ornamented vocal lines that contrast in their dynamics and climates, always keeping the narration and interventions of the characters in tension.

Already in her day, María Antonia Vallejo Fernández, known as "La Caramba", was the object of fascination for her beauty, her enormous power of seduction, her mischievous witticisms, her grace in the art of singing and, finally, her unusual religious conversion and retirement at the height of her career. Her memory did not disappear after her death, but in the 19th and 20th centuries her figure, already in the realm of legend, was the subject of songs, books, zarzuelas and films. In this programme we propose to return to the sources that founded the myth of La Caramba, trying to understand a little more about this extraordinary woman.
