DuniEnsemble - Duni: Trio Sonatas, Op. 1 (2019) Music

Born near Naples, Egidio Romualdo Duni (1708-1775) enjoyed success with operas presented in Rome and Milan in the 1730s before moving to London in 1736 and then to the Netherlands for a decade. The six trio sonatas were published in Rotterdam around 1739, while the attractive collection of minuets and contredanses appeared in London the previous year. Together they form Duni’s only published collections of chamber music; the greater part of his output remained opera, both serious and comic, and the melodic flair of these works displays the artistic signature of a composer for the stage.

Woldemar Bargiel was a German composer. Bargiel was the half brother of Clara Schumann. (…) Besides teaching and composing, Bargiel served with Brahms as co-editor of the complete editions of Schumann's and Chopin's works. While Bargiel did not write a lot of music, most of what he composed was well thought out and shows solid musical craftsmanship. His chamber music—he wrote four string quartets, a string octet and three piano trios—represents an important part of his output.

The son of a blacksmith, Quantz had his early training, after the death of his parents, as an apprentice town musician in Merseburg. He was employed as an oboist by August II of Saxony in Dresden and in Warsaw, but sought to further his career by study of the transverse flute. At the same time he developed his abilities as a composer and his knowledge of current repertoire, with periods of study in Italy and visits to Paris and to London. In Berlin he taught the future Frederick the Great, who, on his accession to the Prussian throne in 1740, employed Quantz as a composer, principally for his own private concerts which Quantz superintended. Quantz’s treatise on flute playing has proved an informative guide to the general performance of music of the time.

If you’ve not previously heard of the Sitkovetsky Trio, it’s because this is the ensemble’s recording debut. Formed in 2007 by three young musicians who met at Menuhin School in England, the group won first prize at the International Commerzbank Chamber Music Award just one year later, and then the NORDMETALL Chamber Music Award at the Mecklenburg Vorpommern Festival one year after that in 2009.
