Unfortunately, this concert album is often overlooked when discussions of the great live rock albums of the '70s arise. UFO's Strangers in the Night deserves to be right up there with Kiss' Alive! and Thin Lizzy's Live and Dangerous, based on the excitement the group and its audience generate and due to the quality of the hard rock compositions. This is a band at its peak, with its prime lineup (led by German guitar-monger Michael Schenker) and all of its best songs.

Most of the reviews for this record tend to point out the supposed mediocrity of the post- Michael Schenker years for UFO. I feel this is both inaccurate and irresponsible. Schenker is a legend no doubt, but he was one fifth (or fourth, before 1976)of the band when he left after 1978. The most important part of the band, the Mogg/Way song writing partnership, was still intact. Paul Chapman proved to be more than capable of continuing the honored UFO traditon of potent lead guitar.

Issued as a mini disc, UFO's seven song Ain't Misbehavin' studio recording was pulled together in response to the group's low carb Misdeamenor LP. Following UFO's tour of the states in 1987, in support of Misdemeanor, the group used ideas from the tour as a basis for their next project. In an effort to get back to an harder edge, the revamped line-up of high flyers took to a no frills recording approach. Phil Mogg and crew managed to lay out a raw rocker in the album opener, "Between A Rock And A Hard Place", which is an energetic cut and shows off the unique vocals of the group's veteran front man.

With the defection of guitarist Paul Chapman, drummer Andy Parker and keyboardist Neil Carter, Phil Mogg kept UFO flying during the mid-'80s with the release of Misdemeanor. The veteran front man held down the vocals as the revamped UFO line-up included six string shredder "Atomic" Tommy McClendon, plus bassist Paul Gray, drummer Jim Simpson, and long time mate Paul Raymond back on keyboards. Phil Mogg's ability to pen gripping lyrics is on display once again as the collection of ten cuts are worthy of the UFO name, yet fail to match the intesity of previous UFO recordings when Pete Way and Michael Schenker teamed with Mogg in the high flyer ranks.

Like Saturday Night Live, UFO have had plenty of creative ups and downs over the years but have often demonstrated that one should never give up on them. The veteran hard rockers have recorded some superb albums along the way, and they have recorded some weak, lackluster albums, too. But even when they let their followers down on occasion, UFO have had a way of bouncing back and giving those followers new reasons to be optimistic. The Visitor, it turns out, is a respectable 40th anniversary present from UFO, who were formed in 1969 and remained active 40 years later in 2009.

TIE Fighter & UFO  Games

TIE Fighter

Released in 1997, The X Factor: Out There… And Back is a two-CD UFO compilation issued by Snapper Music. Disc one of the high flyer collection features twelve tracks from the band's early sighting, with original guitarist Mick Bolton in the ranks, when the group leaned on spaced-out psychedic blues. Included from the pre-Chysalis Records era are "Boogie for George", a cover of Eddie Cochran's "C'mon Everybody", and a live version of "Lovin' Cup"…
