This is a truly great 60's compilation album. All the tracks are original studio recordings as released at the time. Unlike many 60's compilations it includes US tracks as well as UK. The key to the style of music is in the title - The first summer of love. It represents much of the best music from that era with true Flower Power style (early psycedelia mixed with the developed 60's beat style delivered in 3 to 4 minutes each).
Although the brits are well represented, it is the addition of many of the absolute classic Flower Power US artists hits that make this such a great representation of the era. With 45 tracks on two discs it delivers a fantastic sweep of some of the best recordings you could ask for.
This compilation was not released through the high street record chains, it came via supermarkets in the 90's, which is why it's not so often seen.

There are two quite distinct faces to the world of the rock musician: faces so contrasting that it is little wonder that so many contemporary stars appear at times to have lost touch with any kind of reality. While mass adulation hounds and sometimes even destroys the successful ones, the road to that status remains a golden dream for generation after generation of young people. Show me a boy with an interest in pop music who never once imagined himself as a rock superstar and I’ll show you a liar. Jim Maclaine, the anti-hero of the film STARDUST, was such a boy. To him success as a star was an end in itself, and before he achieved it he never questioned what price he might have to pay for that goal. And it is the way in which he achieves his ambition and the resulting pressures and despairs that are the subject of the film. Jim Maclaine is a fictitious figure, created on screen by David Essex. Rock music is to do with contemporary life: with the way in which young people see themselves and their problems. On stage, or in the recording studio, an artist can, by virtue of his creativity, cast aside the self doubts and neuroses which were frequently responsible for much of his success.

It's hard to pull off a tribute album to a recently deceased celebrity with grace and style, but Diana, Princess of Wales: Tribute works extraordinary well. None of the songs on the two discs are explicitly about Diana, but the generally wistful, melancholy tone captures the feeling of mass mourning and regret. And, on the most basic level, it offers a collection of strong mainstream '90s pop songs. Only three of the songs – Neil Finn's new solo acoustic take of "Don't Dream It's Over," Peter Gabriel's "In the Sun," and Rod Stewart's fine cover of Dylan's "Love Minus Zero/No Limit" – are new recordings, and most of the collection features familiar items: Queen's "Who Wants to Live Forever," Annie Lennox's "Angel," Bruce Springsteen's "Streets of Philadelphia," Seal's "Prayer for the Dying," Des'ree's "You Gotta Be," Michael Jackson's "You Are Not Alone"…
