Velvet Underground

À sa sortie le 12 mars 1967, combien imaginait que le premier album d’un jeune groupe new-yorkais managé par Andy Warhol (qui en signe la fameuse pochette à la banane) et baptisé Velvet Underground deviendrait l’un des plus grands disques de toute l’histoire du rock’n’roll ? Un des plus influents surtout… Pour relire ses onze chansons devenues presque toutes onze classiques, l’alléchant casting trans-générationnel a, comme souvent dans ce genre d’exercice, deux options : la reprise sage dans les rails de l’original ou la déconstruction revendiqué. Michael Stipe de R.E.M. entame les hostilités avec une introduction à la clarinette de Doug Wieselman pour un Sunday Morning assez épuré. Épurée également et fantomatique, la Femme Fatale de Sharon Van Etten qui avance à deux à l’heure et finit par fasciner.

With a few lineup changes at the start, and a couple hiatuses since, the Feelies have been together for over 45 years now. The band upended traditional rock 'n' roll cliches and structure to arrive at their own beautiful jingle-jangle mourning, propelled by a submerged and insistent force—oh, let's just call it Jersey motorik. Their music is characterized by strict attention to volume, repetition, and the implementation of subtle changes in tempo and dynamics. Fans of the band have longed for a full-length live album for years; with their Springsteen-length sets and seemingly endless bursts of energy, the Feelies are among the greatest live bands in the world, after all. But the group was too perfectionist to ever allow such a thing to happen with their own songs. Here's a great solution, then: Some Kinda Love, a sprawling set of 18 Velvet Underground songs, recorded at Jersey City's White Eagle Hall in 2018.

On déifie le premier album à la banane, encense le très expérimental White Light White Heat et vénère le troisième éponyme. Mais le quatrième et dernier opus studio du Velvet Underground est souvent négligé pour ne pas dire carrément oublié… Loaded est pourtant un véritable chef d’œuvre même si sa réalisation comme son casting furent on ne peut plus chaotiques. Déjà, l’œuvre renferme un bon nombre de chansons magistrales (c’est bien ici que les tubesques Sweet Jane et Rock’n’Roll apparaissent pour la première fois) à l’image de Who Loves The Sun qui ouvre le disque de manière solaire (logique vu le titre…) et très pop. On est bien loin de la décadence et de la noirceur de la Factory d’Andy Warhol des débuts… Sur un titre comme I Found A Reason, la jovialité aux airs Beach Boys est même de mise. Lou Reed claquera pourtant la porte avant la sortie du disque que terminera Doug Yule qui chante d’ailleurs sur certains morceaux. Même Moe Tucker ne pilote la batterie que sur quelques titres. Qu’importe, Loaded est une merveille qui ressuscite en habits de lumière pour ses 45 ans, remastérisé, avec en prime des prises alternative et des démos.

The bulk of the songs that would become The Velvet Underground & Nico were recorded in mid-April, 1966, during a four-day stint at Scepter Studios, a decrepit recording studio in New York City. This recording session was financed by Warhol and Columbia Records' sales executive Norman Dolph, who also acted as an engineer with John Licata. Though exact total cost of the project is unknown, estimates vary from $1500 to $3000

In 1969 The Velvet Underground played a residency at The Matrix, a small club in San Francisco and performances from these shows were recorded on a tape deck by guitarist Robert Quine. The band was basically at the height of their powers when they disbanded, and these tapes are further proof of that.
