One of the most important records ever made, John Coltrane's A Love Supreme was his pinnacle studio outing, that at once compiled all of the innovations from his past, spoke to the current of deep spirituality that liberated him from addictions to drugs and alcohol, and glimpsed at the future innovations of his final two and a half years. Recorded over two days in December 1964, Trane's classic quartet–Elvin Jones, McCoy Tyner, and Jimmy Garrison– stepped into the studio and created one of the most the most thought-provoking, concise, and technically pleasing albums of their bountiful relationship.

Jazz 'Round Midnight is a good collection of 14 songs Ella Fitzgerald recorded for Verve. It never tries to be a definitive retrospective, choosing instead to concentrate on torchy ballads that make for ideal late-night listening. Consequently, it isn't an album that will please collectors and purists, who would rather hear these songs in their original sessions, but for casual listeners looking for a good collection of sublime ballads, this is a good, affordable choice.

Astrud for Lovers is a strong collection of love songs performed by Brazilian singer Astrud Gilberto. Her wispy and melancholic vocals are featured in a variety of settings recorded between 1963 and 1969 for Verve. The earliest tune, "Corcovado (Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars)," is taken from the legendary Getz/Gilberto album that marked Astrud's star-making first recording. The rest of the collection finds her with Stan Getz again doing a sweet version of "It Might as Well Be Spring" in 1964.

If you are already familiar with the sweet and peerless voice of the late First Lady of Swing, and you don't possess this album, than what are you waiting for? If you have heard of Ella, and do not own a single recording, than this is a great start. This collection is a wonderfully smooth and snazzy bunch of songs recorded in the late 1950s, when Ella still made them weep and laugh at the same time. The first tune is a seductive introduction to the rest. But, it certainly gets better in many different ways. From scat singing to ballads to standards, this cd has it all. Just try to listen to "As Long As I Live," "Blues in the Night," "Oh, What A Night For Love," and tell me if you haven't been converted into a chronic Ella devotee. It is not too late, despite her death a couple of years back, to get into Ella.

One of most enthralling bodies of work from the post-bebop years, Clifford Brown's sides for the Verve and Blue Note labels deserve a spot in every serious jazz collection. But where to start? For those wanting to just sample the goods, there are a handful of fine budget discs out there, especially on Verve; this edition of their Compact Jazz series certainly ranks high, thanks to a balanced program of the trumpeter's varied output. Mostly cut in the few years before his tragic death in 1956, the 12 tracks include some of Brown's cornerstone combo work with drummer Max Roach ("Jordu") and sideman sessions for both Sarah Vaughan ("It's Crazy") and Dinah Washington ("I've Got You Under My Skin").

Partly because of its Brazilian collaborators and partly because of "The Girl From Ipanema," Getz/Gilberto is nearly always acknowledged as the Stan Getz bossa nova LP. But Jazz Samba is just as crucial and groundbreaking; after all, it came first, and in fact was the first full-fledged bossa nova album ever recorded by American jazz musicians. And it was just as commercially successful, topping the LP charts and producing its own pop chart hit single in "Desafinado." It was the true beginning of the bossa nova craze, and introduced several standards of the genre (including Ary Barroso's "Bahia" and Antonio Carlos Jobim's "Desafinado" and "Samba de Uma Nota Só" [aka "One Note Samba"]). But above all, Jazz Samba stands on its own artistic merit as a shimmering, graceful collection that's as subtly advanced - in harmony and rhythm - as it is beautiful…
