Il volume ricostruisce la vicenda del rimpatrio degli italiani dall’Africa come un processo cruciale nell’Italia del dopoguerra, il cui impatto continua a riflettersi nell’identità di chi fece ritorno e nella società contemporanea. Attraverso l’analisi delle testimonianze dei rimpatriati, si esplora l’esperienza del ritorno e i processi della memoria con cui queste persone conservarono, rielaborarono o ridefinirono la propria identità di “italiani d’Africa”, specialmente in seguito al loro reinserimento nella penisola. Nel ricostruire le differenti fasi del rientro il volume adotta un approccio multi-scalare che considera anche le dinamiche sociali innescate dall’incontro con gli italiani della penisola, così come il ruolo delle istituzioni italiane, specialmente dei governi centristi negli anni Cinquanta e Sessanta..
