The music on this 2-disc set and its companion 'Vol 2' set is among the loveliest chamber music you can find anywhere, at least to my mind. Most people know Faure for his gentle 'Requiem,' but anyone wanting to explore the melody-rich world of late 19th-century French Romanticism can't go wrong with these recordings. All of this music is utterly non-flashy and breathtakingly beautiful, never cloying or oversweet like so many works of this period. Faure, an essentially old fashioned guy, was a consummate craftsman and an imaginative melodist.

When he published his two Apothéoses in memory of two great masters of music in 1724-25, François Couperin was asserting his desire to promote a meeting of the French and Italian styles – from a very Gallic point of view, naturally. The idea was to convince the French Muses that henceforth one could say sonade and cantade in their language – a strategy already pursued in the much earlier La Sultane and La Superbe. But, far from blindly imitating his idols, Couperin takes inspiration from their styles and adapts them to his own brio. The result is a delight for all to share with the musicians of Gli Incogniti and Amandine Beyer, whose first harmonia mundi recording this is.

Born in the Bluestown of Chicago in 1951, Tino Gonzales, grew up with the soul sounds of Black music. Blues, R & B, Jazz, and Soul have all contributed to his musical foundations. Having served his apprenticeship with a wide range of blues and jazz greats, he eventually set off on his solo Blues career in 1985. Tino Gonzales is to the blues what Carlos Santana is to Rock music ! Coming from "southside" of Chicago, this one of a kind Chicano cooked his special blues in New York with a touch of funk, a spicy latin groove and a jazzy beat. As a Mexican dude, a spanish blood runs in his veins. Tinos’ blues is hot and so different, a real blast in the today blues landscape. Fluid, cool and sexy that’s Gonzales touch.
