Wolfgang Sawallisch (26 August 1923 – 22 February 2013) was a German conductor and pianist. (…) When he debuted at the Bayreuth Festspielhaus conducting Tristan und Isolde in 1957, he was the youngest conductor ever to appear there. (…) For thirty years, he was closely associated with musical events in Munich. Here he conducted practically all of the major Richard Strauss operas, Salome being the sole exception. He also conducted 32 complete Richard Wagner Ring des Nibelungen cycles and is credited with nearly 1200 opera performances in the city alone…

One of the most acclaimed musicians of his era, Toscanini was a conductor of the "old school" - aristocratic, perfectionistic and something of an autocrat on the podium. After a brief flurry of interest in Fascism in the 1910s, he rapidly became disillusioned with the movement and indeed became a personal rival of Mussolini, repeatedly antagonising him through acts of artistic defiance such as refusals to open concerts with the Fascist anthem Giovinezza.

What a unique, miraculous merger, that of the universes, so contrasted and so complementary, of Richard Wagner (1813-1883) and Franz Liszt (1811-1886), whose thinking and oeuvre so marked the 19th century and who still fascinate us up to the present day. is century, which both crossed in such a singular way, constantly pushing back the limits of their chosen fields and linked by this same quest of the absolute through art: the former, upsetting the codes of opera by taking up with mythology and blending it with poetry, drama and philosophy; the latter, a pianist of extraordinary gifts, adulated by the masses and profoundly mystical.
