Real Heavy Metal, honest and true; there are not many art forms on this earth that exist with such a level of purity. Starting with the giants in the 80's who fathered Heavy, Thrash and Power Metal, there are a select few who continue to purvey the very core of the music that all musicians know and love. USA's THUNDER TRIBE are one of these bands, thrashing out classic Metal in the vein of IRON MAIDEN and DIO. "War Chant" marks the band's debut recording of original material, and what a better way to paint a new picture of the old ways?

1865 focuses on the personal experience of men, women, and children from the North and from the South, toward the end of the Civil War and in its immediate aftermath – as told in songs originally written for the stage and for the parlor, and in songs and instrumental tunes from the hills and back roads of America. Many of the songs in 1865 were published between 1861 and 1865; others first appeared in print earlier, but were sung constantly during the terrible war years, perhaps in an effort to bring to mind the familiar and the good. Yet other songs and instrumental tunes are not datable; by the year 1865, they had already been passed down from generation to generation without the aid of the printed page.

Progressive / Symphonic Rock

Released 40 years after Orson Welles' infamous radio version of the H.G. Wells tale, Jeff Wayne's musical version of War of the Worlds straddles old-style radio drama and contemporary orchestrated narratives by Rick Wakeman and David Bedford. And while it lacks the sophisticated arrangements of, say, Journey to the Centre of the Earth, it does boast an impressively odd cast – this may be the only time that a member of Thin Lizzy worked with Richard Burton, and the presence of Julie Covington and the Moody Blues' Justin Hayward in very attractive singing roles attest to its pop/rock aspirations. It's Burton's sonorous tones that sustain this work; his frequent solo narrations are eminently listenable, whereas sections featuring dialogue with other characters often come off as a bit stilted. The music is competent studio rock, and "Horsell Common and the Heat Ray" does strike just the right balance between Burton's narration and an accompaniment built around a buzzsaw guitar riff…

With the name of the band being derived from the Greek goddess of both war and wisdom, it has always been fitting that much of the band’s music has involved themes of war. To mark the 100 year anniversary of the end of ‘The Great War’ Graeme has written ‘Courage’ assisted by Niall on guitars. We have compiled a free download album featuring ‘Courage ‘ and other songs of War and Peace curated from the band’s archives.

Classical / Symphony / 20th Century

While this set of Shostakovich's Fourth through Ninth symphonies is billed as his "War" symphonies, these six works could be more aptly identified as his "Terror and War" symphonies. After all, the Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth were composed in the years before the "Great Patriotic War" during the period called the "Great Terror," that period of Soviet history in which Stalin attempted to liquidate everyone he ever remotely suspected of having an unkind thought about him. Still, these six symphonies do form a cogent group of works that describe with extremely painful exactitude the horror of living through one of the most horrific decades in twentieth century history, qualities that Russian conductor Valery Gergiev captures with excruciating effectiveness.

"Symphony Of War" appears like a soundtrack for a blockbuster history movie and will attract fans of Malmsteen or Rhapsody of Fire. The sound is influenced by classical music, filigree riffing, big choirs and mighty melodies, notwithstanding first-class Metal attacks and a well-balanced heaviness…..

Having shaped their sound and imagery with three EPs for Monarchy Music and a demanding touring schedule, it's no surprise that Cold War Kids have more presence on their first full-length, Robbers & Cowards, than many bands do on their debut albums. Their evocative, oddly soulful vignettes contain shades of Spoon's sardonic, piano-driven rock; the insistent, jittery feel of One Time Bells-era French Kicks; the poetic, rumpled ramblings of the Walkmen; the stripped-down bluesiness of the White Stripes; and in their more theatrical moments, a ghostly trace of Jeff Buckley, as well as touches of folk and gospel…

A couple of years ago MV reviewed a debut four track EP from a British/Polish collective from Surrey, and Bad Solution’s first foray was pretty impressive. Now, they are back with their first full length – it includes a few that were on the EP – and they have lived up to the potential they showed back then.
