Was Here

We've been following the career of Norway's Lucifer Was here at SoT for quite a number of years, and for those who might be new to the band, they formed in the late 1960's under various different names before settling on Lucifer Was in the early '70s. The band played plenty of live gigs until 1974, when they split up before recording any of the original music they had written and played live. Fast forward to 1995 when various members of the original band got together for some jamming, and an updated version of Lucifer Was crept from the grave, recording their first ever album in 1997 and they have stayed fairly active since then. Morning Star is their latest Transubstans Records release, and comes three years after 2014's DiesGrows. This new one also features the complete original line-up of Lucifer Was along with the current version of the band!…

The calendar may have technically flipped to November, but Halloween is celebrated year round here, at Zombies In My Blog. In early October, Here Come The Mummies performed a rousing set to a packed house at the Ryman Auditorium in downtown Nashville. That night was also notable because their latest CD, All Excess, was also released then.

Closing in on 20 years since their last album, the whole gang is here, pretty much – the core of Don and David Was and Sir Harry Bowens and Sweet Pea Atkinson, along with Was (Not Was) vets Luis Resto, David McMurray, Wayne Kramer, Donald Ray Mitchell, and Randy Jacobs, as well as roughly a couple dozen additional accomplices, from Booker T. Jones to (of course) Kris Kristofferson. Mixing and matching funk, rock, and soul with a little jazz and blues, and enhanced on occasion by some seamlessly incorporated electronics, Boo! delivers robust party material with plenty of straight-faced, sidesplitting/head-scratching humor…precisely what you'd expect from them, then. They've remained ageless all along, balancing their adolescent pranksterism with sharp social observations and deliriously random humor, deploying it all over sturdy grooves that roam unselfconsciously across the history of R&B.
