Scott Weiland’s wild side has been extensively documented, but the frontman for Stone Temple Pilots and Velvet Revolver is in relatively modest, tuneful form throughout Blaster. His backing group, The Wildabouts, are students of ’70s rock (34-year-old lead guitarist Jeremy Brown died tragically upon the album’s release). This influence shows; there's a T. Rex cover (“20th Century Boy”) and the Marc Bolan–inspired “Way She Moves.” “Modzilla” evokes Blue Öyster Cult’s “Godzilla,” while “Beach Pop” imagines what The Beach Boys might've been like had they arrived a decade later. Even the acoustic-based “Circles” is reminiscent of country-rockers The Pure Prairie League. Fascinating stuff.

British composer Douglas Weiland has long been acclaimed as one of contemporary music’s most outstanding composers for the string quartet medium, and his evolving cycle has won much admiration. Composed between 2011 and 2012 the Fourth and Fifth Quartets show him at the height of his artistic powers, where he seeks connections across time, and shows a Classical commitment to form, invention and melodic beauty. His conceptions can be Schubertian in scale and scope, while also displaying the influence of Haydn and Bartók.

Though lambasted in some quarters as cynical clones of the then-vaunted "Seattle sound" (in particular, Alice in Chains and Pearl Jam) STP's 1992 debut nonetheless found a considerable following for its potent crunch and sly hooks. While some tracks do seem to ape the era's grunge ethos a bit too slavishly, there's also a sense that perhaps Weiland and company were merely sharing some of the same influences as their contemporaries–and on standouts like the riff-savvy "Sex Type Thing" and the moody acoustics of "Creep", accomplishing it with a bit more ambitious range. Indeed, the radio anthem "Crush" belies a devotion to songcraft disdained by many of their peers, one that served as an effective bridge between the stadium rock of the '70s and '80s and the more introspective alt-rock just then coming into vogue–even if the album's triple-platinum sales showed just how ironic and misplaced the "alternative" label could ultimately be. –Jerry McCulley

STP went on to become one of the most commercially successful rock bands of the 1990s, selling nearly 40 million records worldwide, including 17.5 million units in the United States, before their dissolution in 2003. The band has had 16 top ten singles on the Billboard rock charts, eight of which peaked at #1, and one #1 album for Purple in 1994. That same year, the band won a Grammy for "Best Hard Rock Performance" for the song "Plush" from the album Core. Stone Temple Pilots were also ranked #40 on VH1's The 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock.
