The fourth volume of our complete recording of Bach's cantatas completes the series of secular cantatas from the composer's years in Leipzig. Seven works are involved here, spanning a period from 1725 to1742, the year of Bach's final secular cantata, BWV 212. Of Bach's occasional compositions, some fifty secular pieces have survived, yet these represent no more than a fraction of what must once have existed. Bach's secular cantatas cover a period of almost exactly three decades.

The Flying Dutchman (Der Fliegende Hollander) is one of the most accessible of Wagner's works, and though it is the first of his operas that earned a permanent place in the repertory, it still possesses many aspects of conventional operatic practice, as well as a Weberian leitmotiv structure much simpler than that exhibited in Wagner's music after Tristan. Surprisingly, despite its accessibility, recordings of the work that are not deficient on technical or vocal or musical grounds seem to be in comparatively short supply. An exception is this classic CSO-Solti effort dating from the late '70s, where the sound is reasonably up to date, and the casting ranges from good to excellent.

The Dutch quintet plays DKdF in the saxophonist’s Raaf Hekkema’s arrangement for ten different reed instruments: oboe, oboe d’amore, english horn, saxophones, clarinets, basset horn and bassoon. Amazing enough, this recording on modern reed instruments sounds more “baroque” (and sometimes “renaissancy”) than many others, regarding the tone of certain instruments - oboe d’amore, bassoon etc (…) Recommendation: Satisfaction guaranteed for many a different musical taste.
