Los Angeles-based White Sun is known for its pioneering interpretations of yogic mantras. These are the songs of yogis sung with penetrating vibratory musicality that enhance consciousness and awareness while delighting the senses. White Sun’s music emphasizes the healing vibrations of mantra through the clear profound lead vocals of Gurujas. Band members Harijiwan and two-time Emmy winner Adam Berry serve up the richly layered, rhythmic foundation that takes listeners beyond the every day realm to a place of inspired, energized experience.

Adding politically charged spoken-word lyrics to instrumental jazz needs to be done with care, because if sloganeering is tedious to listen to once, it becomes unbearable on repeated exposure. The record containing it drops off one's playlist. Counterproductive or what? The British saxophonist and rapper Soweto Kinch, however, has pulled the trick off many times. From Conversations With The Unseen (Dune, 2003) through to The Black Peril (Soweto Kinch Recordings, 2019), Kinch has made the combination work because of the poetic rather than agitprop nature of his words and also because he does not overload his music with them, letting his saxophone do much of the talking.

Commissioned by the London Symphony Orchestra and Serious, White Juju is made up of six new works for jazz quintet and chamber orchestra.

Produced by Jonathan Wilson (Angel Olsen, Father John Misty, Margo Price, Billy Strings) at his Topanga Canyon Studios and featuring an array of first-rate musicians including Wilson on drums, Big Thief’s Buck Meek on guitar, and string arranger and keyboard player Drew Erikson (Lana Del Rey).
