The name of the Balkans has an unusually graphic etymology: having discovered the beauty of this pivotal part of Europe, which stretches from Italy to the Bosphorous, and the ruggedness of its people, who put up fierce resistance to invasion, the Turks chose to describe the region with the words Bal (Honey) and Kan (Blood). Honey & Blood: never was there so apt a metaphor! So much richness and drama packed into such a small area is guaranteed to fire the imagination of historians and artists, especially musicians. Thanks to the magic of an ambitious programme built around the cycles of life, Jordi Savall invites us to travel the length and breadth of a region which has always had more than its share of human and historical drama. 230 minutes of music scan the full range of human emotions illuminated by 1001 different musical traditions, all of which nevertheless spring from a common source. "The future belongs to those with the longest memory", wrote Nietzsche. Once more, Jordi Savall brilliantly demonstrates that music is a key component of the collective memory that enables us to face our future. This lavishly documented CD-Book, translated into 12 languages, is a must for any self-respecting collector.

Because legendary bandleader Tommy Dorsey had so many popular hits during the 1930s and '40s, his later work has been, comparatively, ignored or dismissed. But the 70 choice selections here, each one recorded with fine musicianship and in great sound from 1950 to 1953, show that Dorsey was still a formidable trombonist and innovative musician. Besides "Opus Number Two" and "T.D.'s Boogie Woogie", swinging follow-ups to past successes, two new versions of Tommy's theme, "I'm Getting' Sentimental Over You," one with a chorus and the other with only the trombone section, piano, and bass (never before on CD); and choice jazz by Dorsey's Clambake Seven, this retrospective includes five complete 10" Decca albums: "Ecstasy: Tommy Dorsey Trombone Solos," "Your Invitation To Dance: Classic Dances in Modern Dance Tempo," "Tenderly: Love Songs in Waltz Time," "In a Sentimental Mood," and "You and The Night and The Music: Tommy Dorsey plays the musical comedy hits of Howard Dietz and Arthur Schwartz." Enhanced by interesting notes, full personnel and recording session information.

It’s the 21st century, somewhere in the banlieues of Paris. A child tries his hand at the piano, then the guitar. Self-taught and motivated, with music loving parents that listen to all the records that count, without ever forcing anything upon him. At age eight, he is quite literally gripped by the White Stripes’ “Elephant”, revealing the secret passages to haunted guitars and liberating electricity, south of all possibility… Soon, his trademark was to become the lyrical preaching of his love for records and the few chords that have the power to shake existences. The sacred anecdotic, as the all-but-forgotten American songwriter put it. To serve music and make the music that people need to hear - his mission.

Franz Joseph Haydn - The Seasons  Music

The Seasons was Haydn's followup to his successful The Creation. In four parts, each musically depicting a season, it offers plentiful opportunities for all the participants to shine and conductor Jacobs, his splendid orchestra and chorus, and three outstanding soloists deliver a committed performance that's a delight from the first note to the last. Jacobs is known for his gutsy interpretations and this set is no exception; tempos are lively, the few passages of second-drawer Haydn (still preferable to most composer's top-drawer stuff) retain interest, and the period orchestra delivers crisp, lively playing. Haydn's genius transforms many genre scenes: a summer storm, hunting episodes, daybreak, the gloomy winter fog, peasant dances, and imitations of nature, like frog croaks that will bring a smile to your face. Special kudos for the RIAS singers, who bring a finely blended sound and colorful word painting to the choral numbers. Güra's mellifluous tenor makes his solos a joy, but Petersen's light soprano and Henschel's firm baritone are as effective. This is The Seasons to get if you're having only one. –Dan Davis on Amazon

2013 sees the centenary of Britten’s birth and a wide-ranging programme of concerts, operas and events, including performances of his choral music. This recording is the perfect introduction to this repertoire. Included on this Gramophone Award-winning recording is the last choral work for professionals which Britten was to complete—Sacred and Profane—a collection of eight medieval lyrics for voices in five parts (SSATB). Also included is the Chorale after an old French Carol whose text is by W H Auden (a close friend of Britten’s). The Chorale’s text was part of an unachieved Christmas Oratorio on which Britten and Auden intended to collaborate.

Ella Jane Fitzgerald was an American jazz singer, sometimes referred to as the "First Lady of Song", "Queen of Jazz", and "Lady Ella". She was noted for her purity of tone, impeccable diction, phrasing, timing, intonation, and a "horn-like" improvisational ability, particularly in her scat singing. After a tumultuous adolescence, Fitzgerald found stability in musical success with the Chick Webb Orchestra, performing across the country but most often associated with the Savoy Ballroom in Harlem. Her rendition of the nursery rhyme "A-Tisket, A-Tasket" helped boost both her and Webb to national fame. After taking over the band when Webb died, Fitzgerald left it behind in 1942 to start her solo career.
