Women Robot

This book comprises an overview of twelve months of intense activity of the research group Geometry, Topology, Algebra, and Applications (GEOMVAP) at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC). Namely, it contains extended abstracts of the group meeting in Cardona and of the international Workshop of Women in Geometry and Topology aligned with a series of workshops in the topic. As such, it includes a panoramic view of the main research interests of the group which focus on varieties and manifolds from the algebraic, topological and differential perspective with a view towards applications.

Amie, Stacey and Jody must wear electronic ankle bracelets and aren’t allowed out at night. If they breach their curfews, they could get sent straight to prison. Women receive 7,000 of the 60,000 tag orders that are handed out each year, and this series follows three of them. The government say they want to reduce the number of women in prison, and community orders, such as tags, are an alternative to serving time - but what’s it really like wearing a tag for these young women and as part of a system that fails to address the root causes of women’s offending, do they work?

Every time you chew a stick of Juicy Fruit, eat a hamburger, slip on a nylon, plug your phone into a wall socket, flick on a TV, withdraw money from an ATM, lick an ice-cream cone, switch on a computer, ride an escalator, play a DVR, watch a movie about dinosaurs, or pop a tranquilizer, you’re doing something that originated at a world’s fair or trade expo.
