Beethoven was born in Bonn in 1770, the son of a singer in the musical establishment of the Archbishop-Elector of Cologne and grandson of the old music director. The latter's fame was stressed in the family by Beethoven's mother, whose husband could never reach the standards so set, leading the composer to take charge of the family after her death, a responsibility that he took all too seriously. In 1792 he settled in Vienna with the encouragement of the Archbishop of Cologne, his patron, an ecclesiastic whose choice of profession was dictated in part by his parentage, as son of the Empress, and in part by weakness in his legs, which had ruled out a military career.

Chopin is best loved for his solo piano music however there have always been question marks over the orchestration in his concertos. In the first concerto, which was in fact the second to be composed, both soloist and orchestra deliver a first rate performance. Chopin’s second concerto is lighter and more piano dominated. Here the soloist Kun-Woo Paik sounds happier and more involved than in the first concerto.

Your projects, programs, and career turn on the difference between "no" and "yes". Yet selling ideas, especially the kinds of ideas that make organizations work, is a skill shrouded in mystery. Part emotional intelligence, part politics, part rhetoric, and part psychology, selling ideas is not like tricking someone out of his money. It's about helping others to see things your way: engaging their minds and imaginations.

A weird, wonderful album from two English brothers, Mark and Clive Ives, who dabble in electronically treated acoustic instruments to make their pleasant Eno-esque soundscapes. On "Upside Down" a bubbling rhythm supports echoing slide guitar; on "Marion" watery acoustic guitars play over a relaxed, submerged drum machine; on "No More Telly" a propulsive beat drives quickly amidst a mysterious bassline and a guitar so treated that it distorts and tops out. The Ives brothers' talent lies in making their clarinets, violins, and guitars sound electronic, while conversely making the programmed elements sound earthy and homegrown. Despite being released in 1990, the sound of the record is lo-fi, more akin to the warmth of Eno's Music for Films, but unlike it enough to be without much comparison in the world of music in general. Highly recommended.
