2 CD Edition. Although generally not as highly regarded by the critics as the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, or the Who, the Kinks may well have influenced far more musicians. The three-chord sledgehammer proto-metal burst of teenage lust called "You Really Got Me," the Kinks' third single and first hit, touched off a garage band explosion, which in turn influenced the rise of punk a decade later. Blessed with an astute songwriter in Ray Davies, the Kinks followed the template of "You Really Got Me" for a couple years, racking up hits with "All Day and All of the Night," "Tired of Waiting for You," and "Till the End of the Day." But Davies had more than one card in his pocket, and he blossomed into a sharp social satirist ("Dedicated Follower of Fashion"). By the time the album The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society was released in 1968, Davies had become a master of elegiac studies in English suburbia. The gender-bending "Lola" was a big hit in 1970 and the Kinks entered the video era in 1983 with "Come Dancing" and its memorable video. The Ultimate Collection spans the group's career in two discs, including the hits, B-sides, and key album tracks.

Low Budget doesn't have a narrative like Preservation or Soap Opera, but Ray Davies cleverly designed the album as a sly satire of the recession and oil crisis that gripped America in the late '70s – thereby satisfying his need to be a wry social commentator while giving American audiences a hook to identify with…

The Kinks are an English rock group formed in 1963, and categorised in the US as a British Invasion band. The Kinks have been cited as one of the most important and influential rock bands of all time. The Kinks first gained prominence in 1964 with their third single, the hit "You Really Got Me", written by Ray Davies. The band's name came from their "kinky" dress sense of leather capes and boots worn on stage. The group's original line-up consisted of Ray Davies on lead vocals/rhythm guitar/keyboards, Dave Davies on lead guitar/vocals, Pete Quaife on backing vocals/bass guitar, and Mick Avory on drums and percussion. Following Quaife's departure in 1969.

Great collection of 10 British EP's of The Kinks between 1964 & 1969. A perfect combination of hits and non LP tracks. The CD's comes in mini replicas of the original vinyl artwork packaged in a hard box with a limited edition certificate (my copy is 6080 of 15000) and a beautiful poster. The tracks are not remastered, just straight transfers from the production tapes; there are some minor glitches in the mono tracks but the overall sound is very good. Ripped with BonkEnc Audio Encoder in OGG format at HVBR (High Variable Bit Rate). Average Rate is 376 kbps. For unknown reasons the EP's are not in chronological order but I've solved this with the help of the official discographies found in the net .

The Kinks were an English rock band formed in Muswell Hill, North London, by brothers Ray and Dave Davies in 1964. Categorized in the United States as a British Invasion band, The Kinks are recognized as one of the most important and influential rock acts of the era.Their music was influenced by a wide range of genres, including rhythm and blues, British music hall, folk, and country. Ray Davies (lead vocals, rhythm guitar) and Dave Davies (lead guitar, vocals) remained members throughout the group's 32-year run. Original members Pete Quaife (bass guitar, vocals) and Mick Avory (drums and percussion) were replaced by John Dalton in 1969 and Bob Henrit in 1984, respectively. Dalton was in turn replaced by Jim Rodford in 1978. Keyboardist Nicky Hopkins accompanied the band during studio sessions in the mid-1960s…

Sony's 2014 compilation The Best of the Kinks: 1964-1971 weighs in at a generous 17 tracks but it's difficult to compress the band's first decade onto a single disc. Some sacrifices must be made and so they are. Many hits and swinging '60s standards are here "You Really Got Me," "Tired of Waiting for You," "Till the End of the Day," "Dedicated Follower of Fashion," "Sunny Afternoon," "David Watts," "Days," "Victoria," "Lola" but there are several notable absences, including "All Day and All of the Night," "Stop Your Sobbing," "Death of a Clown," "Dead End Street," "Waterloo Sunset," and "Autumn Almanac." Everything that's here is excellent, so this is a nice sampler, but it's just a bit too haphazard to qualify as a preferred introduction.
