Wouldn't you have guessed it?? After returning to a Purple song format in Scarabus, that Ian Gillan and his band would go on to return to live "old glory" moments in the Budokan theatre in Tokyo, where the Japanese crowds are sooooo easy to please and way over-appreciative. Recorded after the band's Scarabus album, I suspect this was probably among the last gig of the IGB well that band with that line-up)

IAN GILLAN has proven himself as one of the most powerful and charismatic rock vocalists over a career which has seen heady fame with DEEP PURPLE, solo success and a seemingly tireless work ethic. Gillan's first teenage act, GARTH ROCKETT AND THE MOONSHINERS, proved a valuable stepping stone to a more professional outfit that shared the same rehearsal room: RONNIE AND THE HI-TONES.

Naked Thunder is a 1990 solo album by Ian Gillan, released soon after his departure from Deep Purple in 1989. It features a varied selection of songs, with one of Gillan's most passionate and impressive performances on power ballad "Loving on Borrowed Time" and traditional field lament "No More Cane on the Brazos". It was also the first album to feature Ian Gillan's long time writing partner Steve Morris. Naked Thunder was produced by Leif Mases and features a number of notable guest musicians, including drummer Simon Phillips and former Grease Band keyboard player Tommy Eyre.

After leaving Deep Purple in June 1973, Ian Gillan had retired from the music business to pursue other business ventures, including motorcycle engines, a country hotel / restaurant (with a guitar shaped swimming pool), and ownership of the Kingsway Recorders studio, where from April 1974 he began to work on his first post-Deep Purple solo tracks.

Deep Purple fans were outraged, Heavy Metallurgists ran shrieking for cover. But Ian Gillan's first post-Purple project remains one of the hardest, loudest and most exciting of all the mothership's myriad offspring – and the fact that Child in Time is such a brutally funky album only amplifies its achievements…

Toolbox is the second solo album by Ian Gillan originally released only in Europe, Japan and Brazil on German label EastWest. Gillan screamed his way through an entire album. Not that bad actually. It was Gillan's last album before his second comeback with Deep Purple in August 1992. Worth pointing out that, although the ‘Gillan’ band logo is used on the cover, this release is considered and billed as an Ian Gillan solo album.

As perhaps the crowning glory in Spitfire/Eagle's extensive Ian Gillan reissue series, Cherkazoo & Other Stories is at once both the most eagerly anticipated volume by hardcore fans and the lone disc in the series to appeal to a larger audience than Gillan fanatics. Nothing on the collection has been previously been released, yet it is all legendary among Deep Purple and Gillan followers. The first eight tracks (six songs, two dialogues) of the compilation are all taken from the previously unreleased soundtrack to Cherkazoo, a children's story Gillan labored over in the early '70s as Deep Purple were riding the crest of their popularity.

Leading his own bands in the late '70s and early '80s, Ian Gillan continued to embrace music that, not surprisingly, was heavily influenced by his former band, Deep Purple. And he never sounded more Purple-ish than he does on Mr. Universe, which isn't quite on a par with Purple's Burn but is stronger than many of the albums the outfit had recorded after Gillan's departure…

As one of the most instantly recognizable voices in all of rock – in a career that has spanned four decades – there isn't much for Deep Purple's Ian Gillan to prove. But to his credit, he's still at it, as the frontman (to this day) for Purple, as well as returning to his solo career when the mood hits, as evidenced by the release of his 2009 offering, One Eye to Morocco. And while there are indeed some rockin' moments heard throughout Morocco, it won't be confused anytime soon with the heavy metal thunder of such early-'70s Purple releases as Fireball or Machine Head.
